A 107-year-old woman has said the key to her long life is Italian food and not getting married.

Louise Jean Signore, who was born in Manhattan in 1912 and celebrated her birthday on Wednesday, said the only medication she takes is for high-blood pressure despite her advanced years.

More than 100 people attended her party at the Bartow Community Centre in the Bronx, New York, where Ms Signore has lived since she was 14.

She told CBS: “I think the secret of 107: I never got married. I think that’s the secret. My sister says ‘I wish I never got married.

“I’m 107 and I just take a high blood pressure pill, that’s all.”

When asked what else had helped her long life, she added: “Italian food. Italian food is very good for you.

“I was brought up with very good food. No soda, no cake.”
