The daily number of people found to be newly infected with the novel coronavirus in Tokyo rose to 107 on Thursday.
It is the first time in two months for more than 100 people to be found to be infected in Tokyo in a single day, since 154 cases were found on May 2, which was during a declared state of emergency.
In Tokyo, the number of people infected with the virus has been on the rise since the government lifted the state of emergency on May 25, and more than 50 people were newly infected per day for six consecutive days from June 26 to Wednesday.
In preparation for a possible second-wave outbreak, the Tokyo metropolitan government announced Tuesday seven criteria for monitoring the ongoing spread of the virus in its new guidelines. However, it did not set numerical standards or other indicators that would be necessary for Tokyo to again request the suspension of businesses. Instead, specific measures, including whether to issue such request, are to be decided based on a comprehensive assessment of the infection situation and the medical supply system.
The metropolitan government plans to discuss the matter at a meeting of experts on infectious diseases to be held from Thursday afternoon.
