105-year-old birthday girl reveals unusual secret to live a long and happy life

A former nurse has become one of the oldest people in the North East at 105.

Doris Wright celebrated her birthday in style with a special afternoon tea at Eothen Homes, in Whitley Bay.

Her friends and care home staff attended her party, where she revealed the secret to her long life was - good food, no smoking and no swearing.

Doris, who has never married, said: "I remember the last day of the First World War.

"Everyone was on the Town Moor celebrating but my parents didn't take me. I was left at home.

"I never married but had boyfriends who sadly died in the war.

"My secret to a long life is easy - good food, no smoking and no swearing."

Doris was born in Spital Tongues in Newcastle, but moved to Gateshead when her dad got a job as a school teacher.

She went to Gateshead Grammar School where she enjoyed studying sciences, which led her towards a career in nursing.

She went on to work at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

More recently, she regularly attended St Peter's Church, Monkseaton, living independently past the age of 100.

In 2016, she moved into Eothen, in Whitley Bay, where she enjoys weekly arts and crafts sessions, visits from a range of musicians and dancers and monthly outings to church.

According to the most recent statistics, Doris is one of only around 400 people currently living in the UK to reach 105, making up just 0.0006% of the population.

Her home manager Dawn Esslemont said: "We try to always make sure residents feel special, but especially so on their birthday.

"We are pleased Doris had a wonderful day enjoying afternoon tea with her friends.

"She continues to amaze the staff every day with her stories of the past. She is such a strong, bubbly character and we love having her here."
