101 (yes, really) sausage dogs seized in crackdown on illegal puppy breeders

Police rescued 101 sausage dogs from breeders suspected of selling dogs without a licence in a crackdown on illegal puppy breeding.

In total nine homes - seven of which were in Rochdale and Heywood - were raided by 30 police, trading standards and RSPCA officers.

It was the culmination of a two month long investigation sparked by complaints from members of the public.

The daschunds were removed from breeders in Rochdale, Heywood, Oldham and Little Hulton in Salford and all the dogs have now been taken into care by the RSPCA.

They are being checked over and looked after at kennels across the region, reports the MEN .

Mark Widdup, director of neighbourhoods at Rochdale council, said: "It is really pleasing that we have been able to execute the warrants successfully and place the dogs into care.

"Thanks to all of our partners who made the operation run smoothly."

An RSPCA spokesperson said: "On Tuesday, November 12, RSPCA officers and partner agencies including Greater Manchester Police and Rochdale Trading Standards executed warrants at addresses in Rochdale, Oldham, Heywood and Little Hulton.

"We are unable to comment further while enquiries continue."

The dogs are not currently available for adoption as they still form part of an investigation.

Rochdale council say a number of individuals involved are currently under investigation.

No arrests have been made.

The  Manchester Evening News  has contacted Greater Manchester Police for a comment.

Anyone who has bought a dachshund in the Rochdale borough in the last 12 months is asaked to call the council's environmental health team on 0300 303 8871.
