100ml liquid limit at airports to be scrapped as new 3D scanners to be installed

Travellers will be spared the hassle of unpacking liquids and laptops at airport security by new hi-tech scanners.

Security staff will see more detailed images of bags using 3D imaging systems that will be rolled out to all British airports by 2022.

The 100ml liquid limit, introduced after terrorists tried to blow up transatlantic jets with explosives hidden in soft drinks bottles in 2006, will be abolished.

That means queuing times will be cut and passengers will be able to take bottles of water through security.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “The equipment will boost the role our airports play in securing the UK’s position as a global hub for trade, tourism and investment.”

The 3D scanners have been trialled at Heathrow and will now be installed everywhere.

They work like hospital scanners to produce a 3D image of what is inside the bags.

Operators will be able to zoom in on items that look suspicious, reducing the requirement for follow-up manual checks.

UKHospitality boss Kate Nicholls said: “This will bolster the UK’s international reputation as traveller-friendly.”

Heathrow chief John Holland-Kaye, who has a £50million to spend on the new scanners, said: “This technology will make air travel simple, streamlined and more secure.”
