Les Kiss is hopeful a fit-again Carter Gordon can pry open Japan's defence as Eddie Jones spoke of geese and gold fish in predicting a Townsville Test points-fest.
Wallabies coach Kiss, in his second game in charge, has recalled No.10 Carter Gordon at Declan Meredith's expense while prop Massimo De Lutiis is set to become the 1000th cap after being named on the bench for Saturday's rematch.
The sides met in stifling Osaka conditions last Saturday, Australia defying a 20-minute red card to survive in a 35-32 win.
Kiss has rotated his forward pack and included Isaac Henry at No.13 for the injured Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, creating an all-Brisbane Wests club connection with Gordon, No.12 Hunter Paisami and recalled bench utility Filipo Daugunu.
Jones, who has coached his Japanese team to play at speed and counterattack, is tipping the "ideal" afternoon conditions to produce a free-flowing game.
Kiss hopes his attack clicks too, with Gordon capable of breaking lines with his passing or footwork and speed.
The Reds' flyhalf endured an injury-riddled NRL cameo - including a serious spinal fluid leak - before returning to rugby last year and suffering a string of niggling leg injuries.
"He's built up his robustness and is ready to go again," Kiss said.
"He takes the line on; we believe we can open up and stretch this opposition we're playing against."
"I'm keen to see all the No.10s and ... how they operate. Three games from Declan, I've got good information on him now and he's only going to get better for us."
Gordon spent last week on the sidelines in Japan but enjoyed a kicking session and sight-seeing on his day off with Osaka-based former Wallaby flyhalf Quade Cooper.
"I've had a lot of small niggles, spent a lot of time on the sideline in rugby league with my feet up, not really walking there at all at one point," the 25-year-old said.
"These niggles have probably been a result of that ... hopefully keep my body sweet for the rest of the year.
"I try and catch up with Quade as much as I can; such a great player and now coach (with Kitetsu Liners).
"What he knows is second to none and to tap into that is important for my development and what I can pass on through him is great for everyone."
Carlo Tizzano and Charlie Cale will partner Harry Wilson in the backrow while Josh Canham has been rested and Lachlan Shaw will call the line-outs in a new lock pairing with the recalled Lukhan Salakaia-Loto.
Kiss hopes to deploy bench flanker Fraser McReight alongside Tizzano, who both play No.7 at club level and give Shaw the responsibility in his third Test to "future proof" the squad.
Jones has switched Brisbane expats Ben Cornelsen, who started in Osaka, and Harry Hockings at lock while 21-year-old flyhalf Ryunosuke Ito is poised to punish Australia if given the chance.
The goal, Jones said, was to convert more of those counter-attacking moments.
"We've been watching videos of geese ... to reinforce to the players to not be goldfish, but be geese," he told media on Thursday.
"The head of the flock is like the ball-carrier, who is king that everyone follows. We've got to be in line with the ball carrier to turn those long breaks into points.
"They (Townsville) had an NRL game two weeks ago with 100 points scored, it'll be a very fast game.
"There's some really good things happening but we've set ourselves the task of really taking it to Australia this weekend."
"We haven't achieved what we want to achieve yet, which is a victory over Australia."
