A 100-year-old man has shared his thoughts on the coronavirus pandemic, branding the crisis "worse than war".

Speaking to ITV, centenarian Owen Filer said Covid-19 was scarier than historic conflicts such as the Second World War, because it is "unseen".

In a wide-ranging interview, Mr Filer, from Newport, Wales, also derided the efforts of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other officials to counter the pandemic as "rubbish".

"We want somebody like Churchill don't we, somebody really solid to steer us the right way," he said. "Because we are certainly not going the right way."

According to official figures, coronavirus has killed at least 33,614 people throughout the UK to date - the highest death toll in Europe.

Worldwide, the number of people killed by Covid-19 is meanwhile nearing 300,000 people.

Many countries - including the UK - have implemented dramatic lockdowns and stringent restrictions on public life amid the crisis.

Commenting on the impact of the measures, Mr Filer said he missed "being able to go out and do what we should be doing".

"It's pinning everybody inside their houses isn't it," he added.

However, Mr Filer did highlight one positive to come out of the pandemic, pointing to a renewed sense of community throughout the UK.

Hundreds of thousands of people are currently engaged in volunteering efforts aimed at helping the vulnerable and elderly, while public shows of support for healthcare workers battling the Covid-19 outbreak have become commonplace.

"I've had people say to me - do you want anything Mr Filer? I'll do your shopping for you," Mr Filer said.

"I've never heard that before ... but at least they are there now. They've suddenly remembered - we've all got to help one another, haven't we?

"And we will meet again, one day, won't we."

Since the interview, a clip of Mr Filer speaking has spread quickly on social media, with several people quick to commend the 100-year-old as an "amazing man".

Rob Osborne, the ITV journalist who interviewed Mr Filer for a second time after first meeting him while filming on the high street in Newport in January, meanwhile said he was "thrilled the world has taken to 100 year old Owen Filer again".
