100 year old Glasgow pub reveals reopening plan to bring punters back and keep them safe

A Finnieston pub has revealed the measures that have been introduced to make it safe for customers ahead of its reopening.

The Brass Monkey on Argyle Street has been closed since March 20, and has begun making moves for opening its doors to customers again.

Pubs and restaurants have been given the go-ahead from the Scottish Government to reopen from July 15.

Co-owner Derek Baillie said: “We’ve started taking the boards down, preparing to start opening again.

“It’s been been challenging times. We've been closed since 20th March, so it’s over 100 days.

"Fortunately, we’ve come out of it in a reasonable position. We’ve managed to keep all of our staff thanks to the furloughing scheme and obviously keep the business going for a pub that has been here as the Brass Monkey for over 11 years, but as an actual pub for well over 100 years."

Derek said he was delighted to be opening the doors to punters again, and said regulars had been very supportive.

He said: "It’s strange, it’s great - it’s a great feeling to know you’re getting the business back open. We’ve got our regulars back in who have been great. We started our off sales a few week ago and the regulars have been very supportive.

"When we were closed, they were in just making sure the premises was alright, stopping by and saying ‘how’s things, guys? When do you think you’ll be open?’ Just even text messages and Facebook messages, people sharing over Facebook and saying ‘we’re still here’."

In order to abide by government guidelines and keep customers safe, a number of new measures will be introduced in the pub, including more staff training, a text message system for ordering and dividers between booths.

Derek said: "We’re doing more staff training. Staff, even though they’re furloughed will do some online training. We’ve done a risk assessment for the pub, they’ll all get a copy of that and get taken through it. We will change slightly the way you order when you come into the pub - we’ll do table numbers and you’ll order initially through a text message to the pub, eventually we will put QR readers in for when we’ll have an app.

"We’ll be putting dividers between our booths and obviously we’ll stick to the guidelines from the Scottish Government.

"If you know the Brass Monkey at all, you know that we have benches. The two large benches to the left of the pub have been taken away, so you’ll be able to move a bit freer.

"It will be table service if you want it or as I say, with the text messsage."

He added: "I think people are desperate now just to come to the pub - which they’re welcome to do of course!”
