North Ayrshire Council is offering residents the chance to give their gardens a boost with its free compost giveaway events.
Around 100 tonnes of loose compost will be available for residents to collect this week at the following locations:
- Wednesday, September 15 — Stevenston Shore, Trelawney Terrace car park
- Thursday, September 16 — Kilbirnie Library carpark
- Friday, September 17 — Vikingar car park, Largs
The nutrient rich compost will be available for people to grab a share from 12noon.
However, as it will be loose, residents are asked to bring a bag and shovel along with them.
The compost comes from the food and garden waste which is collected within North Ayrshire each year — last year alone this was almost 12,500 tonnes.
Therefore, by recycling the right stuff in the right bin, not only does it help to reduce the £3 million spent on sending waste for final disposal, it also provides environmental initiatives such as these which gives back to the community.
Council Jim Montgomerie, cabinet member for Green New Deal and sustainability, said: “Our compost giveaways are a great opportunity for community groups and individuals to reap the rewards of recycling. They allow our residents to see first-hand just how beneficial recycling can be.
“I would encourage all those who could make use of the compost to head along and get a share.”
Compost supplies are limited and will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
