100 Streets review – lightweight

Idris Elba in the ‘soapy’ 100 Streets
Idris Elba in the ‘soapy’ 100 Streets.

A solid cast can’t save this soapy three-stranded London drama. Glossy but resolutely small screen in its approach, this is a superficial piece of storytelling. Idris Elba plays a former rugby captain whose national hero status is threatened by his slide into drugs and alcohol abuse; Gemma Arterton is the trophy wife who has had enough of his repeated infidelity; Charlie Creed-Miles plays a cab driver torn apart by guilt over an accident; and Franz Drameh is the disenfranchised young man who dreams of escape from the gang culture that surrounds him. There are a couple of strong moments – Creed-Miles paralysed with indecision at the funeral of the pedestrian he hit is one – but the whole thing is too obvious and formulaic to carry much weight.
