£100 fine and penalty points for driver who sat in outer lane of M8 without overtaking

A motorist was stopped and fined £100 for failing to move over from the outer lane on the M8 this week.

The driver received the on-the-spot penalty fine and three points on their licence from police after staying in the fast lane without overtaking any other vehicles.

The incident happened on the M8 near to junction 15, with Police Scotland officers then tweeting about it online in a bid to encourage other drivers to move over.

On the Road Policing Scotland Twitter page on Monday they said: “Sitting in lane 5 of 5 on the #M8 at #J15 whilst not overtaking any other traffic will certainly bring you to our attention. Not moving over will net a stop, 3 points and a £100 fine-as one driver found out today.

“It’s inconsiderate to other road users.

“Return to the leftmost lane!”

The move was welcomed by other online.

One Twitter user posted: “Thank you! The M8 seems to be the worst for it, probably because the impact is so great with just two lanes for so much. Middle lane hogging is bad anyway but sitting in the only possible lane for an overtake with a clear lane to the left is unforgivable.”

Another said: “My pet hate, at least this is progress.”
