€100 electricity credit scheme: Who is eligible, how to apply and when payment will be made

Every household in Ireland is set to get €100 off their electricity bill in the coming months.

The once-off payment has been agreed by the Government in a bid to tackle surging energy costs.

The Cabinet is due to sign off on the law changes needed to implement the credit on Tuesday. Legislation will then go through the Dail and Seanad, with the payment likely to be made in March.

Around 2.1 million account holders will benefit from the scheme, with the money due to be deducted from bills automatically.

Several energy providers upped their prices last year, blaming the cost of natural gas, low wind speeds and temporary power plant shutdowns.

Who is eligible

Anyone who holds a household electricity account can get the payment, including pay as you go customers. The scheme will not be means tested.

How to apply

The exact mechanism as to how the payment will be applied is currently being finalised, however you will not need to do anything.

You will not need to apply for the payment and account holders will see the money automatically taken off their bill.

When will the payment be made

No exact payment date has been confirmed but it is expected to be made in March.

The date depends on how quickly the legislation passes through the Dail. If passed by Cabinet on Tuesday, it could go before the Oireachtas next week, meaning it could be introduced by March.

How much money will I get

Account holders could get slightly more than €100, because the payment will not include VAT.

Speaking on Tuesday, Minister for the Environment, Eamon Ryan, said: "It's €100, the reduction in VAT means people will get slightly more."

Does it apply to renters

If your landlord pays your electricity bill, it will be up to them whether or not they pass on any of the money.

The Residential Tenancies Board will be tasked with handling disputes by renters who do not see the savings passed onto them.

Does it apply to Pay As You Go customers

Yes. All household electricity account holders will see the savings applied to them.

Are people with multiple homes eligible

Yes. The scheme applies to every household electricity account holder, so anyone with multiple electricity accounts will get the payment for each house.

Where can I get more information

Keep an eye on your supplier's website, where further information will be posted. The Department of the Environment will also be issuing updates.
