The government plans to extend the 100,000 yen per person coronavirus cash handout to Japanese nationals living abroad, according to government sources.
Currently, only those who are listed on the basic resident register as of April 27 are eligible for the cash payment, excluding the about 1.4 million Japanese nationals living overseas. The government released its official stance on the issue on Tuesday.
"The Liberal Democratic Party is discussing the issue and related ministries are sorting it out," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference on Tuesday. He suggested the government use a separate system from the register system.
The Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry announced on Tuesday that about 38.5 million people have received the cash handout as of Friday, equaling about 30% of the budget. About 28%, or 16.36 million, of households have received the cash handout.
