About 100,000 Gyoda sacred lotus flowers have reached peak bloom at the Ancient Lotus Park in Gyoda, Saitama Prefecture.
The Gyoda lotus is said to date back between 1,400 to 3,000 years ago. The lotuses germinated naturally from ancient seeds found near the site of a garbage incineration facility under construction in the early 1970s.
As the distinctive pale-pink flowers shrink back into buds in the afternoon, the morning is the best time to see the blooms, which are expected to impress until early July.
The park asks that visitors wear face masks as a precaution against the novel coronavirus.
