New play equipment is to be installed this month at a play area near Ilkeston with the help of a £100,000 grant.
The play area, at on Barling Drive Lagoon in Shipley View, will now feature a disability access, with work expected to be completed in no longer than six weeks.
The money for the extra facilities at the play area has been granted by from FCC Communities Foundation.
Ruth Barrett, of Barling Drive, who is also head teacher of Little Pines Day Nursery, said: “It is a welcomed asset because it will be an opportunity for children to be outdoors and it is more inclusive for everybody."
Residents have played a huge role in accessing funds for the refurbishment, with parents from the Ilkeston Parents for Play Community reaching for residents’ support back in January 2018 in the first stage of the funding application.
“We had sponsored walks organised by Parents for Play and we also had a fundraising at the nursery which raised £250. Parents are all really excited to see the end result,” the 45-year-old added.
Erewash Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council also supported the project.
“Thanks to the considerable grant being awarded, it will certainly make a huge difference to families in the Shipley View community who will benefit from having a safe, up-to-date and bigger play area.” said Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure.
The new design of the play area was picked by residents and members of the Ilkeston Parents for Play, with the help of local officers.
