Are you making it through the month solely on the strength of your nine-to-five? If not, you are well within the norm. A survey by MyPerfectResume found that 71% of U.S. workers rely on a side hustle to pay their bills

For You: 5 Unusual Ways To Make Extra Money That Actually Work

In a time when most Americans feel the need to pick up extra work on the side to stay afloat, which side hustles offer the most flexibility?

10 WFH Side Hustles Paying $1,000 a Month

Many would-be side hustlers struggle with where to start. They don’t know which gigs offer plenty of hiring opportunities and pay well.

To help spur some ideas, FlexJobs compiled an (unpublished) list of ten side hustles with abundant part-time listings in the site’s database. All allow you to work from home, fully remote.

FlexJobs cross-referenced the gigs with the highest demand with hourly rate information from Payscale.com to arrive at the following list:

  1. Therapist ($32/hour)
  2. Nurse Practitioner ($58/hour)
  3. Customer Service Representative ($17/hour)
  4. Copywriter ($25/hour)
  5. Executive Assistant ($25/hour)
  6. Accountant ($24/hour)
  7. Interpreter & Translator ($24/hour)
  8. Content Writer ($23/hour)
  9. Graphic Designer ($21/hour)
  10. Tutor ($20/hour)

Granted, some of these positions require credentials or degrees, such as nurse practitioner and therapist. But others simply require patience (customer service) or the skills of the trade (graphic design).

Benefits Beyond the Money

The extra income is always welcome, of course. But career coach Toni Frana with FlexJobs said that side hustles offer more opportunities than just extra cash.

“Side hustles let you pursue a passion project or test out a new job type without letting go of your current job. That gives you the opportunity to test the waters before making a more permanent change.”

Side hustles also let you develop valuable skills that can help with career development. Plus, many let you work flexibly on your own schedule, from anywhere in the world.

Tips for Boosting Billing

You may be willing to work an extra ten hours a week at $25/hour, but side hustles aren’t always that straightforward. Often it takes time to find clients or employers — time that you can’t bill.

“Start by creating a clear scope of work with a simple contract,” says Billie Argent, cofounder of Passionates Agency which hires freelance workers. “Minimize revisions and other nonbillable work to keep your real hourly earnings high.”

It also helps to focus on a field with abundant demand for contract labor, so you don’t spend weeks applying for work that never materializes.

Often side hustles can evolve into a full-time business or a new career path. But they start by simply marrying what you’d like to learn more about with what employers need.
