10 ways that visitors judge your home - from the smell to the books on your shelves

Brits are most likely to judge your house by its smell.

A poll of 2,000 adults found your home's aroma is the first thing you'll be measured on by visitors.

This was followed by the ambient temperature, and whether it's been recently vacuumed.

The study also found the average person takes just 38 seconds to judge someone else's house, with three quarters admitting to forming opinions of others based on their dwelling.

But the research, commissioned by the Independent Network powered by VEKA, found three in 10 wouldn't tell their host what they really think of their homes.

A spokesman said: "Our homes are of course very personal to us and in many ways are a representation of our style.

"So there is a sense when we have visitors over that we are leaving ourselves open to criticism and judgement.

"But people shouldn't be apprehensive about what others may or may not think - ultimately it's the opinion of the homeowners themselves which is most important."
