Whether you’re a fleet manager for a construction firm or a weekend warrior looking to transport toys to the lake every weekend, one of the major advantages of pickup trucks is the ability to tow big loads with ease. Not all trucks are created equal, though, and some are rated for a bigger, heftier trailer than others. Your regular half-tons will tow anywhere from 11,000 to 14,000 pounds, while their heavy-duty counterparts can carry over 36,000 pounds.
Based on manufacturer-quoted, optimal-configuration specs incorporating a gooseneck or fifth wheel hitch whenever applicable, here are the top 10 trucks of 2025 ranked by max towing capacity.
10. 2025 Ram 1500: 11,600 Pounds

- Engine: Twin-Turbo 3.0L I-6
- Output: 420 Horsepower
- Price: $42,370
Kicking off this list with a towing capacity of up to 11,600 pounds is the Ram 1500. To get this number, you need to go for the 4x2 Quad Tradesman model with the six-foot-four-inch box and 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six engine. Ram discontinued the Hemi V-8 this year for the 1500 but is bringing it back for 2026 because it realized people buy trucks with their ears and their hearts as much as they do with their heads.
Even without the Hemi, though, there’s enough grunt here to pull a couple of regular-size cars or indeed another full-size truck, but the 2025 half-ton Ram’s towing ability falls short compared to its direct rivals by anywhere from a few hundred to a couple thousand pounds.
9. 2025 Toyota Tundra / 2025 GMC Hummer EV Pickup: 12,000 Pounds (Tie)

- Engine / Motors: Twin-Turbo 3.4L V-6 / Dual Permanent-Magnet Synchronous
- Output: 389 / 570 Horsepower
- Price: $51,415 / $99,045
It’s unlikely many truck buyers will ever cross-shop these two, but the Toyota Tundra and GMC Hummer EV are tied, both capable of pulling 12,000 pounds on the dot. Specifically, the non-hybrid Tundra and dual-motor 2X Hummer which are powered by a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6 and two permanent-magnet electric motors, respectively.
Yes, for all its bravado, torque, and sheer mass, GMC’s moonshot electric truck tows no more than a six-cylinder Toyota that starts at half the price.

8. 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV: 12,500 Pounds

- Motors: Dual Permanent-Magnet Synchronous
- Output: 510 / 645 / 760 Horsepower
- Price: $75,195
With an official towing capacity of 12,500 pounds in LT or WT guise, the Chevy Silverado EV takes the title as the most tow-capable pure electric truck—no turbos, no diesel, no Pentastar generators here, just a big truck body, a couple of electric motors, and a CCS port that can charge at speeds of up to 350 kW.
Riding on the same architecture as the Hummer EV as well as Cadillac’s Escalade IQ, the Chevy bests both when it comes to raw pulling power.
7. 2025 GMC Sierra 1500: 13,200 Pounds

- Engine: Turbo-Diesel 3.0L I-6
- Output: 305 Horsepower
- Price: $40,495
Landing in the middle of its class when it comes to towing, the GMC Sierra 1500 can trailer up to 13,200 pounds. That figure is achieved with the Double Cab 2WD standard bed model with the Duramax 3.0-liter turbo-diesel straight-six, Max Trailering Package, and 20-inch wheels.
For truck newbies, the GMC Sierra is the Chevy Silverado’s slightly more upscale twin, rocking more chrome, delivering a plusher vibe, and commanding a tad more respect on the jobsite.
6. 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500: 13,300 Pounds

- Engine: Turbo-Diesel 3.0L I-6
- Output: 305 Horsepower
- Price: $39,195
Functionally the same truck as the Sierra, the Chevy Silverado 1500 actually tows 100 pounds more, per GM’s official specs. According to a Chevy spokesperson, this is because the swankier Sierra has more standard features and is therefore slightly heavier. The physics behind this is likely the fact that these trucks’ gross combined weight rating (GCWR)—that is, the max total weight it can safely move, including its own, the weight of everything inside, and the weight of everything on a trailer—is fixed. The Sierra’s higher curb weight eats into this, meaning it can’t tow quite as much as its lighter Chevy sibling.
In any case, ditto with the GMC, grab the Double Cab, 2WD, standard bed, Duramax 3.0-liter, Max Trailering Pack, and 20-inch wheels for max Silverado 1500 trailering weight.
5. 2025 Ford F-150: 13,500 Pounds

- Engine: Twin-Turbo 3.5L V-6
- Output: 400 Horsepower
- Price: $41,700
Dominating its segment in both towing capacity and sales, the Ford F-150 is rated to tow up to 13,500 pounds when had in SuperCrew form with the six-and-a-half-foot box, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, Tow/Haul package, and Max Tow Axle upgrade.
This truck received a refresh for 2024 and now features an optional Pro Access Tailgate and a 12.0-inch touchscreen. Getting an F-150 is empirically one of the least imaginative automotive choices you can ever make, but it’s hard to argue with its success. With 732,000 sold in the U.S. last year (and more than 40 million sold since 1948), Ford’s half-ton is a workhorse.
4. 2026 Ram 1500 Ramcharger: 14,000 Pounds

- Motors: Dual Permanent-Magnet w/3.6L V-6 Generator
- Output: 654 Horsepower
- Price: TBD
The 2026 Ram 1500 Ramcharger isn’t out yet, but it’s set to hit the road soon with up to 14,000 pounds of towing capacity. It’s billed as a plug-in hybrid on paper, but in practice, it’s more of an electric truck that happens to have a V-6 onboard generator.
Meaning that the 3.6-liter Pentastar doesn’t actually move the wheels. It’s purely there to recharge the 70.8-kWh battery, which powers two permanent-magnet electric motors that do the actual driving.
3. 2025 Chevrolet Silverado HD / 2025 GMC Sierra HD: 36,000 Pounds (Tie)

- Engine: Turbo-Diesel 6.6L V-8
- Output: 470 Horsepower
- Price: $47,495 / $48,495
We’re now entering heavy-duty territory with the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra HD trucks. In 3500 form, the big GM twins can tow up to 36,000 pounds if you go for the Regular Cab long bed 2WD dually with the Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V-8 and Max Trailering Package.
This means it’s capable of towing a midsize bulldozer, a single class A motorhome, one big boat, or about six brand new BMW M5s. Doing so likely requires a commercial driver’s license, depending on where you are.
2. 2025 Ram HD: 36,610 Pounds

- Engine: Turbo-Diesel 6.7L I-6
- Output: 430 Horsepower
- Price: $47,660
Besting its General Motors rivals by precisely 610 pounds, the Ram HD has a max tow capacity of 36,610 pounds as a 3500 Regular Cab 4x4 with the 6.7-liter High Output Cummins straight-six turbo-diesel.
The Ram stands out as the only truck in its arena to achieve max towing with six cylinders, not eight. Although it should be made clear that despite the Hemi getting cut from the 2025 Ram 1500’s engine menu, it never left the table for the Ram HD. Both the 2500 and 3500 can still be had with a 6.4L V-8. It just won’t tow as much as the turbodiesel six.
1. 2025 Ford Super Duty: 40,000 Pounds

- Engine: Turbo-Diesel 6.7L V-8
- Output: 500 Horsepower
- Price: $47,395
Living up to its name, the Ford Super Duty goes above and beyond, landing at the top of this list with 40,000 pounds of peak towing capability. To do this, you’ll want the F-450 Regular Cab 4x2 dually with the 6.7-liter High Output Power Stroke V-8 turbo-diesel and the High-Capacity Gooseneck Tow Package.
To put 40,000 pounds in perspective, that’s all 20 of this season’s Formula 1 cars put together and fully fueled. Or a giant, solid cube of granite measuring more than six feet in each direction. Finally, that math degree is paying off.
