10 Reasons Some People Are Regretting Early Retirement

Early retirement sounds like a dream. At 36, I often think that retiring in another 10 years sounds magical. Imagine getting to spend the second half of your life doing whatever you want to do. However, there are many people who took the leap to retire early, and they have some regrets. Whether it’s financial strain or plain boredom, here are 10 reasons some individuals regret early retirement.

1. The Money Didn’t Last as Long as They Thought

One of the biggest regrets people have when they retire early is underestimating how much money they’ll actually need. If you are hanging up your work hat in your 50s, or even your 40s, it could mean that you will need to fund 30 to 40 years of expenses. Possibly even more! When you factor in things like inflation, unexpected healthcare costs, and market downturns, your retirement funds may dwindle away faster than you’d planned for. Withdrawing more than you planned will put your long-term financial stability at risk and could cause significant financial stress.

2. They Missed the Daily Structure of Work

It turns out that having a job provides more than just a paycheck—it also offers a routine. Without that structure, some retirees find themselves feeling lost or aimless. Every day starts to feel the same, and the lack of a schedule can lead to procrastination and boredom. This can be especially tough for people who tied their identity to their careers. Early retirement regrets often stem from an unexpected loss of purpose.

3. Healthcare Was More Expensive Than Expected

Leaving a job often means losing access to affordable employer-sponsored health insurance. For those retiring before Medicare eligibility at age 65, private insurance premiums can be shockingly high. Even those with decent coverage often face large out-of-pocket costs. A single medical emergency can derail an early retiree’s financial plan. Health-related surprises are one of the most common drivers of early retirement regrets.

4. They Underestimated the Emotional Impact

Retirement is a huge life transition, and some people struggle more than they expected. Without the social interactions and professional challenges of a job, feelings of loneliness and even depression can set in. Hobbies and travel plans help at first but may not be enough to fill the emotional gap long-term. Mental health is just as important as financial health in retirement planning. Many regret not preparing for the psychological side of retirement.

5. They Felt Left Out of the Conversation

When you leave the workforce early, you also leave behind a lot of connection points. Colleagues move on, work friendships fade, and staying relevant in your industry becomes harder. Some early retirees miss being “in the loop” or having a reason to keep up with trends and technology. This sense of disconnect can be isolating, especially as the world continues to change quickly. Retirement can feel surprisingly lonely when you’re no longer part of the daily grind.

6. Their Partner Wasn’t Ready to Retire

In couples, retirement only works well when both people are aligned. If one person retires while the other continues working, it can lead to tension. The retiree may feel bored or resentful, while the working partner may feel unsupported. This mismatch in schedules and goals can strain even the healthiest relationships. Many early retirement regrets come from not syncing plans with a spouse or partner.

7. They Missed Earning Extra Income

Not all early retirees are financially set for life. Many thought they could live comfortably on savings, but later missed the freedom that extra income provided. Without a job, every expense starts to feel heavier. Some retirees end up returning to part-time work or gig jobs—not by choice, but by necessity. Financial freedom often feels more restrictive when income stops completely.

8. Travel and Fun Got Old Faster Than Expected

The idea of spending retirement traveling sounds incredible—until it becomes routine. Some retirees found that constant travel lost its charm or simply became too expensive. Others missed having a sense of home or purpose. Without new goals to work toward, leisure time began to feel empty. This led many to realize that fulfillment doesn’t always come from relaxation.

9. They Didn’t Have a Long-Term Plan

It’s easy to plan the first few years of retirement—travel, hobbies, maybe a move—but what happens after that? Many early retirees failed to think long-term. Once the novelty wore off, they didn’t have a road map for staying fulfilled and active. This lack of direction caused some to feel adrift or regretful. Retirement should be a new beginning, not just an escape from work.

10. They Left Work They Actually Enjoyed

Not everyone retires because they hate their job. Some leave early simply because they can, but later realize they miss the work itself. Whether it was the challenge, the creativity, or the camaraderie, work can be surprisingly hard to give up. Many retirees who were passionate about their careers ended up returning in some capacity. Regret often follows when you walk away from something you genuinely love too soon.

Retirement Isn’t Just About Money—It’s About Meaning

The dream of early retirement is powerful, but it’s not one-size-fits-all. As these examples show, many who retire early eventually face challenges they didn’t expect—financial, emotional, and relational. Planning for retirement means more than saving money; it means creating a life that remains fulfilling long after the 9-to-5 ends. If you’re considering retiring early, take time to plan not just your finances, but your future sense of purpose.
