10 powerful images that changed the course of world history

Once seen, never forgotten. The photo of a naked nine-year-old Kim Phuc running from a napalm attack summed up the horror of the Vietnam War.

The striking image was caught by Vietnamese photographer Nic Ut. He took her and other injured children to hospital before delivering his film to be developed.

Her village, Trang Bang in southern Vietnam, was napalmed by South Vietnamese forces who thought that North Vietnamese fighters were occupying the area. Kim Phuc suffered third degree burns all over her body.

It’s just one of the shots featured in the History Channel ’s new series Photos that Changed the World.

It shows how a powerful image can sum up a story, sway public opinion and even, in a few cases, change the course of history.
