10 pictures of people enjoying night out in Newcastle in 1999 - do you recognise anyone?

Tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1999...

You might remember the song, by Prince, which perhaps ironically was released 18 years earlier.

These lads and lasses were all up for a party as we snapped them enjoying nights out in Newcastle between April and August, 1999.

Their photos appeared in section which featured people having fun in and around the bars of the city centre.

We hope the last 20 years have been good to the revellers in our pictures.

Back in 1999, we were all looking ahead to the new millennium.

You couldn’t escape it - and on its front page, helpfully counted down the number of days until 2000 arrived.

Thankfully when the clocks finally ticked into the new age, the feared ‘millennium bug’ didn’t wreak havoc with the planet’s computer systems.

And even more thankfully, the end of the world - predicted by a host of mystic figures - failed to materialise.

In more down-to-earth matters, 1999 saw the introduction of the minimum hourly wage in the UK; the premiere of the cartoon figure SpongeBob SquarePants; and the opening of the Millennium Dome in London.

Meanwhile, let’s hope a good night out in was had by everyone in our photographs!
