10 pictures looking back at Michael Caine filming Get Carter in the North East

When the iconic British movie Get Carter was filmed in the North East, it created quite a buzz.

The 1971 thriller brought stars like Michael Caine and Bryan Mosley to the region, and was filmed in and around Newcastle, Gateshead and County Durham.

It made a car park in Gateshead famous - the multi-storey building at Trinity Square, which has since been demolished, was a vital part of the cult gangster movie.

Jack Carter, played by Caine, threw businessman Cliff Brumby, played by Mosley, off one of the top levels.

It later became known as the Get Carter car park.

The Get Carter plot sees the protagonist, a hardened London crook, journey to Newcastle after the death of his brother.

When he travels north with the intention of planning the funeral, Carter begins to suspect his brother was murdered.

The classic crime film was adapted from Ted Lewis' novel Jack's Return Home, which in turn drew inspiration from the real life murder of Angus Sibbet, who was slayed in a suspected professional hit in 1967.

Sibbet was found dead in the back seat of his car.

The bloodied Jaguar was discovered under Pesspool Bridge, in County Durham, in January 1967.
