10 people found in back of van after police follow up 'suspicious' report

A man was charged by police after a van pulled over by officers was found to have 10 people in the back of it.

At around 2.40pm on Tuesday, police stopped a Ford Transit van trying to exit the Wallasey tunnel after a report was received that motorbikes were being loaded into the van suspiciously.

The van had been spotted on Alfonso Road, Kirkdale, at around 2.20pm where a motorbike was seen being loaded into the van, before it was driven in the direction of Rumney Road West.

With the assistance of Mersey Tunnels Police, the vehicle was stopped around 20 minutes later attempting to exit the Kingsway tunnel in Wallasey.

Police found 11 people - including a driver - inside the van and four motorbikes on board.

Anthony McDonagh, 32, from Willenhall in the West Midlands, was arrested and charged with using a motor vehicle when the number of people was likely to cause danger, driving without a licence and insurance, and failing to provide a breath sample.

The 10 passengers were also issued penalty notices by police for failing to wear a seat belt.

McDonagh will appear before Wirral Magistrates Court on 15 April 2020.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We charged a man and cautioned 10 others after a van was stopped with 11 people and four motorbikes on board at the Wallasey tunnel on Monday (24 March 2020).

Officers successfully detained all 11 occupants at the scene, and four motorbikes were found to be in the van.

McDonagh was released on bail.
