10 new police start in Newcastle district

Newcastle Police District has welcomed the largest allocation of probationary constables it has had "for a very long time" with the arrival of 10 new trainee officers in the district.

The ten probationary constables had their first day on the job on Monday, with five to be based at Newcastle station and the other five at Waratah.

Newcastle City Police District commander Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said the district received the lion's share of new recruits in the Northern Region.

"Ten is a significant number," he said.

"We're a very busy command.

"It's no secret that we are very, very busy and they will get an excellent grounding in all the varying areas of general duties. It will be an eye opener for them."

Lake Macquarie teen Callan Maguire is one of the new recruits and said he was excited to start after completing his training at the police academy.

"I've always been interested in the job, helping people," he said. "[It's] something different everyday.

"I've been doing this process for over a year now so I'm really eager to get started."

Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp said he had advocated for new police in the city for several years.

"It's just fantastic to see so many new police here in Newcastle starting their careers," he said.

"I always welcome more police officers here in Newcastle.

"I'm sure they'll do a magnificent job."
