A single community group in Chicago will be awarded $10 million Thursday to develop and revitalize a neighborhood on the city’s South or West Side.
The inaugural Chicago Prize competition, sponsored by the Pritzker Traubert Foundation, will be awarded to one of the six finalists representing Gresham, Little Village, Englewood, North Lawndale, Austin and South Chicago.
Last year, 80 teams on Chicago’s South and West sides submitted proposals on ways they would address systemic poverty and economic exclusion. A panel of experts reviewed the proposals, and on Dec. 11, the panel highlighted 20 proposals and nominated six of those as finalists for the $10 million prize. The finalists each received a $100,000 grant to refine their plans ahead of the panel’s final selection.
Finalists’ proposals range from a renewable energy and urban farming center in Gresham to a food-centric community hub in Little Village.
The winner of the $10 million prize will be announced on the Chicago Prize website at 2 p.m. Thursday.
