10 inspirational photos from Newcastle and Gateshead World Transplant Games 2019

Inspirational athletes from across the world have spent a week gracing the North East's roads, paths, pools and tracks for the World Transplant Games.

The Games , which concluded on Friday, highlight the of former transplant patients who have had life-saving surgery.

The event , by showcasing patients who are now thriving - and paying tribute to those whose organs saved lives.

It all began with an emotional baton relay, which celebrated the lives saved after the tragic death of a 22-year-old man, Tom Wilson, whose organs saved the lives of 50 people.

Six-year-old Fatima Mirza - who received Tom's liver - opened the relay in London. It was greeted in Newcastle by Gordon Paw, who Tom's heart was donated to.

Team GB topped the medal table at the games, which were held at venues in Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland between August 17 and August 24.
