The first day of the month is a beautiful one. Just when you think you’ve burned through every great movie option available on your favorite streaming app, a myriad of new films are added to services like Netflix
And August is no different. There are dozens of new movies hitting Hulu this weekend, and several more coming throughout the month.
This article will highlight ten great picks from the August lineup. Then at the end of the article, you will find every new movie coming to Hulu during August and what dates those movies will premiere.
Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace
While we all wait for No Time to Die—which will be Daniel Craig’s final showing as James Bond—let’s enjoy the first two 007 movies of the Bond era. Casino Royale has enjoyed a great reputation over the years. And, personally, I think Quantum of Solace gets a bad rap.
Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace will be available to stream on Hulu on August 31.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold
Dora and the Lost City of Gold joins the ranks of Sonic the Hedgehog and the recent Jumanji movies as a great example of how to blend family-friendly fun with genuinely entertaining action and adventure. Isabela Moner inhabits the role of Dora the Explorer with ease, and Eva Longoria and Michael Peña do a great job as the parental leads.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold will be available to stream on Hulu on August 3.
A Good Woman
Years before Scarlett Johansson earned two Academy Award nominations in a single year, she was killing it alongside Helen Hunt in the 2004 romance A Good Woman. Johansson and Hunt duel it out as Hunt’s character tries to win over Johansson’s husband.
A Good Woman will be available to stream on Hulu on August 1.
The Last Stand
Arnold Schwarzenegger has had a long, prosperous career as an action star—well, he had one anyway. He’s been much quieter over the past decade as a leading man. But he did star in The Last Stand, an underrated western from the mind of Kim Jee-woon, a director who made a name for himself in South Korea with films like A Tale of Two Sisters and The Good, the Bad, the Weird.
The Last Stand will be available to stream on Hulu on August 1.
Monster’s Ball
To this day, Halle Berry is the only African American woman to ever win Best Actress at the Academy Awards. And she won that award for Monster’s Ball—a gripping drama about two emotionally injured people who find solace in one another. Alongside Berry, Billy Bob Thornton delivers a fantastic performance.
Monster’s Ball will be available to stream on Hulu on August 11.
The Peanut Butter Falcon
Dakota Johnson—one of Hollywood’s rising stars and most underrated actresses—said that Shia LaBeouf was the “greatest actor of my generation.” That was based on her time spent with him while filming The Peanut Butter Falcon, a film that centers on a man Down syndrome who desperately wishes to become a professional wrestler.
The Peanut Butter Falcon will be available to stream on Hulu on August 6.
Rain Man
Back in the day, one of my very first DVD purchases was Rain Man. I knew nothing about the movie, other than it had won Best Picture at the 1989 Academy Awards. And to this day, the movie has held up. Rain Man centers on a young man named Charlie (played by Tom Cruise) who discovers that he has an autistic older brother (played by Dustin Hoffman).
Rain Man will be available to stream on Hulu on August 1.
Stanley & Iris
This 1990 romance starring Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro is beloved by many, yet I I’m not sure it’s ever received the proper recognition it deserves. Stanley & Iris focuses on a woman named Iris (played by Fonda) who is grieving the loss of the her husband. But her life starts to turn around after meeting local cook Stanley (played by De Niro).
Stanley & Iris will be available to stream on Hulu on August 1.
Ultraviolet
Unfortunately, Ultraviolent has a pretty horrid reputation. Upon its release in 2006, it was chastised by critics as an inept addition to the action/sci-fi genre. I, on the other hand, really value the film’s weird, unparalleled aesthetic. So whether you hate or love Ultraviolet, I doubt you’ve ever seen a dystopian movie like it.
Ultraviolet will be available to stream on Hulu on August 1.
Up in the Air
Jason Reitman was a hot director in the early 2000s with films like Thank You For Smoking and Juno. But many consider his first truly great film to be Up in the Air. Starring George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick, the film follows a “corporate downsizer” (played by Clooney) as he travels around the United States.
Up in the Air will be available to stream on Hulu on August 1.
