Jan. 26--One person was killed on the westbound 10 Freeway in Fontana early Monday when a big rig crashed into a freeway sign and burst into flames, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened near Citrus Avenue about 3 a.m., said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos. For unknown reasons, the big rig drifted onto the right shoulder and slammed into a freeway sign pole, he said.
The truck, which was carrying frozen chicken, immediately "burst into flames," said CHP Sgt. Josh Buffum. The driver died at the scene, officials said.
Pieces from the sign fell onto the freeway and caused more cars to crash but no one was seriously injured, Buffum said. The freeway was shut down until about 5:20 a.m., when two lanes were reopened. All lanes of the westbound 10 were expected to reopen before 9 a.m., Buffum said.
The crash was the second deadly incident on Southern California freeways overnight.
A pedestrian was killed in a crash on the southbound 5 Freeway in Commerce late Sunday, the CHP said.
The person was hit north of Triggs Street just south of the 710 Freeway about 11:15 p.m., the CHP said. All lanes of the freeway were reopened by about 3 a.m.
