10 forgotten Premier League stars with points to prove including Dele Alli and Man Utd trio

We're now less than a week away from the big kick-off in the Premier League as the 2021/22 campaign looms.

Newly-promoted Brentford will kick the season off by hosting Arsenal on Friday night.

It's been a summer filled with drama, managerial twists and turns and transfer records being shattered.

Between them, Manchester rivals United and City have dominated the summer headlines after splashing out the best part of £175m on Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish - but what about some of the stars who haven't been in the spotlight this summer?

Here, Mirror Football looks at 10 of the Premier League's forgotten stars with a point to prove ahead of the new season.

1) Dele Alli

Dele Alli's fall from grace at Tottenham has been one of the biggest shocks in recent Premier League history.

Alli looked a star pretty much instantly after making the jump to the Premier League for £5m as a teenager.

The midfield ace quickly became a star for club and country - playing a pivotal role under Mauricio Pochettino in the two campaigns where Spurs fell just short of finally tasting Premier League glory.

Since then, Alli has endured a torrid time under Jose Mourinho. The star barely featured at all in the league last year after a horrid loss of form, making just 15 appearances.

The 25-year-old will be hoping the opportunity of a new regime under Nuno Espirito Santo will give him the platform to rediscover the spark which saw him light up the Premier League previously.

2) Aymeric Laporte

Aymeric Laporte's spell on the sidelines at Manchester City last year was another surprise.

The Spanish international was a rock at the back during his maiden campaign in Manchester, which saw City race after Laporte's £57m arrival from Athletic Bilbao at the start of 2018.

But injury issues and the resurgence of England international John Stones has since forced Laporte into the shadows.

That combination, plus the presence of club-record £65m man Dias, has led to City being open to offloading the 27-year-old this summer.

But Laporte will be determined to muscle his way back into Pep Guardiola's plans this year and show the type of form which made him one of the first names on the teamsheet back in City's title-winning 18/19 season.

3) Jesse Lingard

Jesse Lingard might not be the Premier League's forgotten man after a sparkling spell on loan at West Ham last season, but there will be few with more of a point to prove than the Manchester United ace.

The England star should get the chance to salvage his Old Trafford career after shining for the Hammers.

Lingard netted an impressive nine goals in just 14 games in East London to reignite his Premier League ambitions, although the £73m arrival of Jadon Sancho in Manchester could complicate matters.

Lingard has shown his pedigree for United in previous years and will be hungrier than ever to cap his return to form with a starring role at Old Trafford in the coming season.

4) Daniel James

Manchester United splashing out £73m on Jadon Sancho has cast major doubt over Daniel James' future.

The speedy winger was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing as United boss in a £15m deal back in 2019.

The Welshman only featured fleetingly for United last term, making 15 Premier League appearances compared to the 33 he racked up in his debut season at Old Trafford.

But James could be handed an unlikely reprieve with Marcus Rashford's shoulder issue requiring surgery.

James has never given any indication that he wants to leave United, so he'll be eager to impress during Rashford's spell on the sideline and scrap for his spot in amongst a bloated United attack.

5) Takumi Minamino

Takumi Minamino was snapped up Liverpool for just £7.25m from Red Bull Salzburg back in January 2020.

The Japanese star impressed against Liverpool for his former club in the Champions League but has so far struggled to replicate that form in a Reds shirt.

Minamino spent a six-month loan spell at Southampton to end last season. The forward impressed in spells, netting twice in 10 games.

Despite being untouchable in recent years, Liverpool's famed attacking trio of Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all endured barren spells last year.

That will give Minamino hope as he looks to nail down a more prominent role at Anfield this season.

6) Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley bursting onto the scene as a teenager for Everton feels like a lifetime ago.

The attacking midfielder has struggled for regular football since agreeing to a £15m move to Chelsea in 2018.

Barkley did impress at times during a loan spell at Aston Villa last year, but his return of just three goals in 24 games is unlikely to tempt Thomas Tuchel into including the ace in his plans.

Another spell away from Stamford Bridge looks likely, but there are question marks over whether or not Barkley can rediscover the promise he showed in the early days of his Premier League career.

7) Shane Long

Shane Long has been cast a Premier League lifeline by one of the summer's most shocking transfers.

Danny Ings completed a surprise £25m switch to Aston Villa on Wednesday.

This could open the door for forgotten man Long to come back into the fold alongside Che Adams in the bid to fire Southampton to an improvement on last years 11th placed finish.

It's been five years since Long had his best season on the South Coast, grabbing 10 goals, and he knows he'll have improve on his record from the past two years where he's netted just twice.

8) Brandon Williams

Brandon Williams broke through into the senior fold under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but has found himself on the fringes at Old Trafford recently.

Regardless, the young full-back has shown that he can be a star of the future for United.

Williams has been linked with a loan move to a Premier League rival for first team football this term, with Southampton and Newcastle two of the teams credited with an interest in the ace.

Williams will be hungry to impress wherever he ends up to reaffirm his potential as a big part of the future at Old Trafford.

9) Jack Butland

Jack Butland seemed to have the world at his feet when he was snapped up for £3.5m by then Premier League Stoke City aged just 19.

Unfortunately, the Crystal Palace stopper's career has stalled since then.

He suffered a torrid time in his final season at Stoke with a number of high-profile clangers, as well as being dropped from the international fold by England boss Gareth Southgate.

And since his Premier League return with Palace, he's made just a solitary league appearance which came in the 3-2 win over Aston Villa back in May.

Butland will be desperate to dislodge Vicente Guaita this term for the number one spot to prove his calibre as a Premier League goalkeeper.

10) Joelinton

Joelinton has flopped since his club-record £40m move to Newcastle (PA)

Joelinton has endured a miserable stay on Tyneside since his club-record £40m arrival from Hoffenheim.

The Brazilian forward was handed the iconic number nine shirt, following in the footsteps of Newcastle legends like Alan Shearer.

Unfortunately, Joelinton has flopped, failing to reach anywhere near the levels expected of him.

It's likely the star is in the last-chance saloon for the Magpies this term, and the 24-year-old will be desperate to improve on his record of just six Premier League strikes over two seasons.
