The ‘Ashington hole’ - left when the incoming county council administration cancelled plans for a new county hall in 2017 - has been a source of some annoyance at the town.

But plans for Portland Park, with a seven-screen cinema and restaurant space plus outline permission for retail and restaurant development on a second plot, were approved in January.

Northumberland County Council and the North of Tyne Combined Authority are seeking to improve transport services in south east Northumberland with the re-opening of the former Ashington and Blyth rail line.

The council committed nearly £10m towards the project earlier this year, following an announcement from the Government that it was one of the schemes it was looking at to reverse the Beeching cuts of the 1960s.
