10 dead, 35 wounded in weekend violence

July 20--At least 10 people were killed or found dead under suspicious circumstances since 3 p.m. Friday afternoon across Chicago.

Among the dead were the decomposing bodies of a mother and her three children found in an East Chatham home with evidence of trauma and a fire that was never reported, and three men dead in a double-murder-suicide in the Mayfair neighborhood Friday afternoon.

Thirty-five people were also wounded in shootings as far north as the Albany Park neighborhood and as far south as Roseland. Some of the wounded were in critical condition. No side of the city was without a shooting this weekend.

Much of the shooting was concentrated in the East and West Garfield Park, Lawndale and Humboldt Park neighborhoods on the West Side, from about Division Street south to Ogden Avenue east of Cicero Avenue and west of California Avenue.

Eighteen of the people wounded over the weekend were shot within those boundaries, including four people shot a few hours apart near St. Louis Avenue and Grenshaw Street early Saturday. Two of the 18 died.

Police were also involved in three separate shootings this weekend: one near the first St. Louis and Grenshaw shooting, one near Cermak Road and Western Avenue, and one near Clybourn Avenue and Halsted Street on the North Side. Police wounded men in the two most recent incidents.

The weekend violence lifted the number of shootings in the city this year through July 20 to at least 1,483, a higher total than for the same periods in 2012 (1,384), 2013 (1,198), and 2014 (1,352), according to an analysis of a Chicago Tribune database of city shootings.

The homicide total for this year through July 20 is 254, higher than 2013 (229) and 2014 (220), according to an analysis of a Tribune database of city murders.
