10 companies that have repaid furlough cash as £446m returned since the start of Covid

Primark, Asos and Halfords are just some of the big-name businesses that have returned millions of pounds in furlough cash.

Furlough has been used by companies who have been affected by the coronavirus crisis, with employees paid 80% of their normal wages for hours they cannot work by the government.

In total, more than 13,000 businesses have paid back all or part of the furlough grants they received from the government - with payments totalling £446,577,823.

A further almost 112,000 companies have made an adjustment to the cash they received - for example, if they made a mistake in their claim or furloughed less people than they first predicted.

Adjustments worth £262,346,416 have been made, taking the total number of companies that have returned furlough cash or altered a claim to 125,000 and a total figure of £708,924,239.

We round-up some of the big-name brands that have returned furlough cash.

Who is eligible for furlough?

Your employer could decide to put you on furlough if your place of work is unable to operate due to the pandemic.

For the hours you do not work, the government will cover 80% of the cost, up to £2,500 a month.

Your boss could also decide to top up your wages, but they do not have to do this.

You can also return to work part-time, where you would get your full pay for hours you do work, and furlough pay for the hours you cannot.

Furlough is open to workers on any type of contract but you must have been on a payroll by a certain date to be eligible.

For furlough claims up until April 30, you need to have been on a PAYE payroll on or before October 30, 2020.

But from May 1 until the end of September, you need to have been on a PAYE payroll on March 2, 2021 .

From July, employers will have to contribute more toward furlough cost but you will still get 80% of your pay for hours not worked, up to £2,500.

Bosses will have to pay 70% up to £2,187.50, while the government will pay 10%, then in August, the state will cover 70% up to £1,875 and employers will foot the remaining 20%.
