The last thing anyone wants is to have an accident on the road - but you could find yourself in an even worse situation if your car insurance is invalid.
There are a number of seemingly common mistakes drivers make which could render their cover useless.
From failing to inform your insurance company of any changes to everyday behaviour you might not even question, there are a list of causes for invalidated insurance.
Car insurance broker Swinton Insurance have looked into the different causes of car insurance invalidation.
A spokeswoman for the company emphasised the importance of knowing exactly what your policy covers so you're not caught out.
She also warned that providing false information could lead to refusal of the claim and having a policy cancelled.

To steer clear of any future insurance claim mishaps, Swinton has put together a list of car insurance invalidation causes drivers ought to avoid:
1. Lying about your primary address.
2. Not informing your insurer about any car modifications.
3. Not informing your insurance company of minor accidents.
4. Young first-time drivers using a low-risk driver such as a parent or partner to be the main policy driver and adding themselves as a named driver to keep insurance costs down.
5. Driving with pets - If you crash with an unsecured pet in the car, your insurance company will likely refuse to pay for your claim.
6. Letting other people drive your car.
7. Recently changing jobs.
8. Wearing high heels or flip flops while driving.
9. Leaving your car unlocked.
10. Attaching fluffy dice, or another object, to the rear-view mirror.
