10 best travel wallets for organising passports and holiday documents

I looked for stylish travel wallets with room for all the essentials - (Alessia Armenise/The Independent)

If you're an avid traveller, chances are you've considered getting a travel wallet or passport holder to keep your passport and important documents safe during your adventures.

Most travellers will only need a holder that can fit a passport, a few cards and a handful of travel documents, but there will be times – such as on long-haul flights or when visiting destinations that require more than just a passport for entry – when you'll need a more spacious wallet.

As a frequent traveller, I tend to have a few on rotation. Depending on my destination, I have favourite options that have earned a permanent place among my must-have travel accessories. Even if you only travel occasionally, investing in a well-made wallet or passport holder is worthwhile, as it can accompany you on your adventures for many years to come.

Whether you're a minimalist or high-maintenance traveller (like me) who prefers a pouch filled with in-flight accessories, I've tried and tested the best options on the market for every travel style.

Bellroy travel wallet

Rating: 5/5

Best: travel wallet overall

Why we love it

  • Sleek and spacious

Take note

  • More expensive than average

Bellroy’s travel wallet is exactly what you expect from this kind of product and more. It holds an incredible amount of cards (more than ten), a passport, money, it has a small space for an extra SIM card, which is a very thoughtful and unusual addition, and it has a mini pen included. This is a traditional travel wallet that works perfectly for everyday use as well. If you travel a lot between two countries, there is no reason to ever leave it at home.

The design is thoughtful and practical (Alessia Armenise/The Independent)

As well as being extremely useful, it also comes with a three-year warranty and features RFID protection as well as Bellroy’s quality, of course. This is obviously a more expensive option than an average passport holder, but if you are looking for a quality travel wallet that is durable, will last a very long time, is versatile and can be used daily, then this option is one of the best ones available on the market as the brand has thought about pretty much everything. The only thing that you won’t fit here is a second passport, but Troubadour and Wingback, as well as July, have great options for that specific need.

Pom Pom London passport holder

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: budget passport holder

Why we love it

  • Great value
  • Real leather

Take note

  • Not as elegant as luxury leather options

My preference will always be a leather travel wallet and passport holder, as I like the look and feel, I think it’s more durable and, to be completely honest, I like it to bring a chic touch to my otherwise very comfortable travel look. I do understand though that a lot of leather options are pricey and, as much as I think it's worth splurging on something that's durable and you'll use for years, I set out to find a reasonably priced option that would still look good and stand the test of time.

This product from Pom Pom London is made of 100% full-grain leather, has a 30-day return policy and a year-long warranty in case something happens – all for less than £30. After testing it, I am pleasantly surprised by how such an affordable product can still deliver durability, comfort and style. This might not boast the craftsmanship of Strathberry or Wingback, but is a great value for money, which is why I think this is one of the best leather passport holders out there.

Strathberry multrees passport holder

Rating: 5/5

Best: luxury passport holder

Why we love it

  • Elegant and well made

Take note

  • Only holds one passport

This is my most used passport holder when I am travelling short-haul and I don’t need to carry a lot with me on the plane. I’ve had a passport holder break my passport before, so I like that my passport is well protected while still being easy to slip in and out. The cover also has an extra space for other small documents – I keep my International Certificate of Vaccination in there even when I don’t need it (mostly so I don’t lose it) and the public transport cards to whichever destination I’m heading to, as well as the luggage tag.

I always come back to this wallet when travelling (Alessia Armenise/The Independent)

There is enough space for all the essentials and, additionally, the quality of the craftsmanship is unmatched, so the passport holder also looks beautiful and chic. I have the tan option with gold hardware, which granted me quite a few compliments when I handed it to hotel receptions all over Europe. It’s definitely on the more expensive side, but if you are looking for a passport holder that will look good and stand the test of time, you can be sure that with this Strathberry option you will be paying for the quality and durability, not just for the name.

Ettinger capra AirTag passport case

Rating: 4/5

Best: passport holder for AirTags

Why we love it

  • Airtag space, elegant

Take note

  • Doesn’t hold many things

I firmly believe that every product you buy needs to be working for you, especially when it comes to luxury items that cannot be considered necessities. If you travel a lot, chances are you've misplaced something while on the move, but if there's one thing you definitely don't want to lose, it's your passport.

I not only travel a lot, but I also move a lot, and I cannot tell you how many times I’ve lost important things, so I now have a set of AirTags that live in my most used bags and accessories. I found it quite hard to find a passport holder that would look nice and also have an integrated tracking system of any kind, but this option from Ettinger is a great solution if you still want a passport holder that is good quality and looks elegant, while putting your mind at ease. I find this one particularly useful if you have a second passport that you don’t use as much as your primary one, as it’s easier to forget where we store things we use less.

Wingback Winston travel wallet

Rating: 5/5

Best: double passport holder

Why we love it

  • Holds two passports

Take note

  • Larger than average as it holds multiple passports

This is a gorgeous piece of craftsmanship that makes for a fabulous gift, for yourself or a loved one. The look is quite masculine and I knew my husband would have his eyes on this one immediately so I asked him to test it while we were travelling. He has two passports and he prefers to carry both of them at all times when travelling so the seamless double space was a game changer. On the left side of the passport holder, there is plenty of space to store cards, money and extra small travel documents, making this a travel wallet more than a passport holder.

I particularly like the quality of the leather used and the level of personalisation that can be requested. You can choose between four colours for the leather and seven colours for the threads – I chose whiskey leather and red thread – and you can add an outer and an inner inscription, which is a nice touch. If you are looking for a high level of personalisation and a good quality product, I can confidently recommend this option (especially, but not only, if you are a lucky holder of two passports).

Troubadour passport wallet

Rating: 5/5

Best: travel wallet for families

Why we love it

  • Holds four passports

Take note

  • Larger than average

In any family, there is always that one very organised person that ends up leading the group through checks and security, if that is you, you might want to invest in a family-style passport holder. Even though I don’t have children, when travelling with my husband our passport count is already at three, so it’s quite handy to have all the documents we need in one place. This passport wallet from Troubadour seamlessly holds up to four passports – for maximum ease I suggest one on the right side and two on the left side – as well as a few cards.

This is a great choice for family travel (Alessia Armenise/The Independent)

I have tried a lot of products from the brand and most of them have stayed in my most-used travel rotation as the quality is extremely high and the design always thoughtful, and this travel wallet is no different. The leather is waterproof and it features RFID-blocking protection for cards, which is a unique and useful feature when travelling, and there is a five-year guarantee for manufacturing faults. This product will stand the test of time and it’s the best option for families and groups, or simply people that carry a lot of documents with them.

Oleada the love pouch

Rating: 4/5

Best: travel wallet for versatility

Why we love it

  • Cute and versatile

Take note

  • Not a traditional travel wallet

This is not a traditional option in any way, but I found myself using this quite a lot when travelling for specific events with only my hand luggage. This pouch from Oleada was not born as a travel accessory, but the brand always adds a day-to-night or travel twist to their product. I have a bag from them (the marina hobo) that I use as hand luggage when I go to the airport straight from work, as it looks elegant while also having a sleeve to easily secure it to the luggage handle.

I use this pouch similarly to the handbag. If I am going on a one- or two-night trip where I know I will have to go out and dress up, I use this pouch as both my travel wallet at the airport and a small going out pouch for the evenings. It fits a phone, a passport, a card holder and a pair of headphones easily, which is all I need for a short flight. The big plus is that, not only does it look very cute, but it also has the option of a long chain, which is easily attached and detached, and a detachable back handle. I use the latter to attach the pouch to either my jeans or my hand luggage, so I have everything I need during the flight on me while also carrying a cute bag for holiday nights out.

Stubble & Co tech bag

Rating: 4/5

Best: travel wallet for tech

Why we love it

  • Holds and protects everything inside

Take note

  • It’s not a traditional travel wallet

Again, a very non-traditional option as I believe that a traditional travel wallet will not be the answer to everyone’s necessities. For me, a travel wallet can go from a simple passport and card holder to a bigger pouch where I can stuff everything I need depending on the type of journey I’m embarking on. When travelling for work, I need a lot of tech with me and I’m often working on tight deadlines, so I’m usually using the time I spend on the flight working in some kind of capacity.

This can carry documents, chargers, headphones and more (Alessia Armenise/The Independent)

When I travel for work and need to take a lot of pictures and videos I often edit on the flight, so instead of carrying multiple bags with me with all I need, I opt for this useful tech bag which has plenty of space and separate compartments for documents for safekeeping. I use the separate front pocket to keep my passport and additional travel documents, the middle zip for cards or a cardholder and then I fit everything I might need during the flight inside, including cables, headphones, my work phone and an external charger. If this sounds similar to what you need on a flight, there is no reason to get a travel wallet and a separate tech bag, this one can fit everything you need.

July large travel wallet

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: zipped travel wallet

Why we love it

  • Spacious and safe

Take note

  • Larger than average

If you are looking for a traditional travel wallet, July has some great options as their travel wallets come in a large and compact version. The large version has plenty of space for all the travel essentials you might need. It holds two passports and three cards, it has a dedicated slot for an AirTag, and can fit a plane ticket as well as money and extra documents. It’s zipped up, which makes it safer than most travel wallets, and has an internal RFID protection, which gives you an extra layer of peace of mind.

This can hold all you need for travel (Alessia Armenise/The Independent)

The design is simple and sleek and the quality of the product is undeniable. I have the classic full leather option, but the brand has recently introduced some really fun striped canvas colours that are lovely for summer. This product is larger than a simple passport holder, so you might not need all it can hold for a short trip, but it’s perfect if you travel frequently and you like to keep all your travel documents somewhere safe. I use it both as intended when I need extra space, or as a safe where I know I will find any of the travel documents I need at home.

Katie Loxton, Travel Canvas Duo Pouch

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: travel wallet for long haul flights

Why we love it

  • Stylish and spacious

Take note

  • Bigger than an average travel wallet

This is a bit of an unusual option but it’s my most used one for long-haul flights. Of course, I love the look and it’s one of the main reasons I like this travel pouch so much (a matching passport cover is also available). I use it either as a one-stop shop for all my in-flight gadgets, or in tandem with my Strathberry passport holder when I’m carrying more documents or things than usual.

I can fit my Kindle and an eyemask for flying (Alessia Armenise/The Independent)
I can fit my Kindle and an eyemask for flying (Alessia Armenise/The Independent)

There are two pouches that can be used together or separately. The bigger pouch has a space for the passport which is easy to access and keeps it secured and separate from the rest. I usually also put my Kindle in there, a pen and a small notebook, and an eye mask if I’m on a red-eye flight. In the smaller pouch, I put everything that I might need to take to the toilet, such as a mini toothbrush, hair pins or similar practical items. This is not a traditional travel wallet per se, but can be used as such if you wish. I personally like to use it for my in-flight necessities more than for documents, but you can definitely swap the eyemask for an extra passport.

What is the best travel wallet?

As a travel wallet is not a necessity when travelling, but more of a good-to-have accessory, I believe you need to find something that will serve you well, and that product will depend on the type of traveller you are, the budget you are looking to stick to, and the non-negotiable things that you always carry with you when travelling.

Depending on the length and nature of my trip, I use different options. Strathberry is without a doubt my most used passport holder, always with me on short-haul flights and often paired with the Katie Loxton pouch. When I travel for work and I need a lot of tech on me at all times, I opt for Stubble & Co, while Oleada’s pouch is literally attached to my hip when I have little space and big plans for my trip. Bellroy deserves the first spot for the quality and durability of the product as well as the versatility and thoughtful design, but both Troubadour and Wingback are incredible options for multi-passport holders.

How I tested travel wallets

As an avid traveller for both work and pleasure, I love travel accessories and I do change them up as much as I can depending on where I’m going or the luggage I’m carrying – so the aesthetic was one of the aspects I considered in this specific article.

These travel wallets and passport holders have been filled with all the essentials I always carry with me, depending on their size and product type. Quality is always pivotal, and some of the higher-end choices have been selected because of the materials used and durability. Versatility was also important, as some trips require different documents or travel accessories to be carried. Overall, all of the products selected offer good value for money, are durable, and cater to different travellers' needs.
