What’s happening this college football season that the investment world is capitalizing on?
Overs. Lots and lots and lots of overs. As in 20 of 27 key games last weekend went over, and mostly by a whole lot. That’s hardly been an outlier in a season with no defense, the offenses way ahead, and with with crazy shootout after crazy shootout.
So let’s not fight the trend. Even if it doesn’t seem like it makes any sense, until this all changes the other way, go over. So while this is normally all about the best point total picks, this week, it’s finding the ten best overs.
If these games don’t go over, you can be sure that most of the others will.

10. Texas State at South Alabama
Point Total: 58
PICK: Over
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
Both teams have good, accurate defenses, and the two should play a fun game that will go down to the wire. Along the way, they’ll trade plenty of punches with offenses that can both throw without a problem. No Texas State game that didn’t hit overtime – like the 51-48 loss to UTSA – has hit 58, and none of the three South Alabama games have hit the mark. Whatever – these two are at the same level and should play in the 30s.
9. WKU at UAB
Point Total: 44.5
PICK: Over
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
This one’s a little different from the other overs on the list. It’s not going to be a shootout, but the 44.5 total is so freaking low that it’s just begging you to dive in. Don’t get hung up on UAB allowing 23 points in the last two games, and don’t get into a twist over a WKU offense that’s incapable of scoring more than 24 points – two of its four games have rolled past 44.5. It’s not going to be easy, but tases two should get to 50.
8. UCF at Memphis
Point Total: 75
PICK: Over
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
Bad Betting Advice 101: Take the over, just because you’re going to watch and it’ll be more fun. As amazing as the UCF offense is, only one of its three games moved past 75, and neither of the Memphis games have come close. Both teams have had time to prepare, and both teams should trade haymakers throughout as they play into the 40s.
7. Kansas at West Virginia
Point Total: 49.5
PICK: Over
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
Really? 49.5? West Virginia might be able to get there all by itself. The offense might have struggled a bit against Oklahoma State and Baylor – scoring 40 point combined in the two games – but it hung up 56 against Eastern Kentucky to start the season, and more importantly, Kansas allowed 47 points in each of its last two games. You likely only need two Jayhawk touchdowns to hit the over with ease.
6. Duke at NC State
Point Total: 59
PICK: Over
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
Duke might turn the ball over a bajillion times a week, but its games have been relatively high-scoring after two low-scoring clunkers to kick off the season. Over the last two weeks against Virginia Tech and Syracuse, the Blue Devil games early blew past 60 points. The last two NC State games got to 59 points, and the first two went way over.

5. Ole Miss at Arkansas
Point Total: 76.5
PICK: Over
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
The under is the right call – but you can’t do that.
It goes against anything normal and reasonable to ever think a game might be able to get to close to 80 points no matter who’s playing. All it takes is one team to be slightly off or a few empty drives to screw this up.
Even a 41-35 shootout doesn’t get it done.
What has the Arkansas offense done to look like it can hang 40 on the board? The Ole Miss defense, though, is making every offense look wonderful.
Florida got to 51 and Alabama scored 63, but that’s Florida and Alabama. Kentucky was able to get to 41, and every Ole Miss game blew past 80 points combined.
It’s the Rebel offense, too. It’s so good that it keeps on pushing and forces teams to press more and play at the same level, so while asking for 77 combined points isn’t right or fair, yeah, that’s our 2020 season.
NEXT: BYU at Houston
Point Total: 62.5
PICK: Over
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
How can the Cougar on Cougar battle not early go over 63 points?
Houston turned the ball over five times against Tulane and it still won 49-31. The passing game was amazing, the offense clicked, and now it gets a home date against a high-powered BYU team that’s going to keep the pressure on.
BYU might have struggled in a 27-20 win over UTSA, but it scored 45 points or more in each of the first three games, but the defense was so good that none of those three got over 60, much less 63.
On a nationally televised Friday night game, each team will up its offensive game, the two passing games will wing it around from the start, and these two should each get to 30 points without worry.
NEXT: Navy at East Carolina
3. Navy at East Carolina
Point Total: 55.5
PICK: Over
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
The Navy defense just isn’t good enough.
It was steamrolled over by BYU to start the season, couldn’t stop Air Force, and it wasn’t great against Tulane and Temple. But can the offense score enough to help get to 55.5? Yeah, because …
The East Carolina defense just isn’t good enough.
The Pirates gave up 100 points combined in losses to UCF and Georgia State to start the season, and when it finally started to come up with stops in a win over USF, the offense did came up with 44 points as the game to 68.
These two should combine for at least 800 yards of total offense, and at least 56 total points.
NEXT: Virginia at Wake Forest
2. Virginia at Wake Forest
Point Total: 57.5
PICK: Over
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
Wake Forest struggled against Clemson. There’s no shame there, but it lost the season-opener 37-13.
And then things got a lot easier.
It might have lost to NC State, but it put up 42 points in the fun firefight with the two teams combined to 87 points combined. The week after, it rolled against Campbell 66-14.
But the Virginia Cavaliers aren’t the Camels of Campbell – but they’re struggling on defense, too.
All three UVA games got to 58 points or more, with the defense allowing 41 to Clemson and 38 to NC State.
The Cavalier offense hasn’t been anything special over the last two games, but the Wake Forest defense will take care of that. Both teams should score 30+.
NEXT: Pitt at Miami
1. Pitt at Miami
Point Total: 47.5
PICK: Over
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
It’s No. 1 on the list, but there’s a reason to still be a wee bit wary – the point total went down because Panther starting quarterback Kenny Pickett is questionable at best.
That, and considering that both bring two of the best defensive lines in college football makes the 47.5 a harder push than it might seem after coming down for 52.5.
Ehhhhhh, whatever.
Each of the last three Miami games – including the 42-17 loss to Clemson – combined for way over 50 points.
As good as the Pitt defense is, it allowed 30 points to NC State and 31 to Boston College over the last two weeks. There’s a danger that the Panthers slow things down a bit and play this in the 20s, but Miami should force the scoring pace to be up a bit.
This week, this season, no one should be getting a 47.5 point total.
