1 killed, nearly 2 dozen injured in Alabama church bus crash in Georgia

ATLANTA _ An Alabama church group's mission trip took a tragic turn Thursday after one person was killed and nearly two dozen were injured when its bus rolled over onto a car in south Fulton County.

The bus was en route to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport about 4 p.m. for a flight to Africa when it overturned onto a black Mercedes sedan, injuring the youth group passengers and killing one of them. First responders at the intersection of Camp Creek Parkway and Merk Road extricated one victim from the bus.

Police aren't yet sure what led to the deadly crash and have turned the investigation over to the National Transportation Safety Board.

Mount Zion Baptist Church officials had begun the process of reaching out to parents when the tragic news struck. Information about when the group left and how long they planned to be in Africa was not available.

The church took to Facebook asking for prayers and received several offers for assistance. U.S. Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., sent condolences via his Twitter account.

Fulton County police said 38 people were on board the bus at the time of the crash, which left four people in critical condition. Those victims were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Others were taken to Atlanta Medical Center and Southern Regional Medical Center.
