A 33-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in Austin on the West Side, police said.

He was shot multiple times in the back about 12:45 p.m. in the 300 block of North Latrobe Street, according to Chicago police. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released details about the death.

Police said no one is in custody.

In June, a man was charged with shooting a Chicago police officer in the same block. Lovell Polk, 33, allegedly shot an officer who entered his home after Polk fired gunshots into the ground during a domestic dispute, police said.

On Friday, Daniel Jones, 27, was shot and killed just blocks away in the 5700 block of West Midway Park.

Chicago police’s 15th District, which includes Austin, has seen a 44% increase in shootings so far this year compared with the same time in 2019. The district has seen 148 shootings through Sept. 27, compared with 103 shootings during the same time in 2019, according to police statistics.

Despite the district’s jump in gun violence, shootings in 2020 are still 37% below what they were in 2016.
