An extremely powerful typhoon left one person dead and at least 5 people injured as tornado-like gusts of wind hit Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, on Saturday. Another 4 people were injured due to the typhoon in Kanagawa, Shizuoka, Hyogo and Tokushima prefectures.

Typhoon No. 19 was heading north over Japan's southern sea and was expected to approach the Tokai and Kanto regions and make landfall from early to late evening on Saturday.

In Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, whirling gusts of wind occurred in the morning as a result of an unstable atmosphere brought about by the typhoon. A 49-year-old man died when the light truck he was in overturned due to the sudden gusts. Some houses in the area were reported to have been damaged.

As the powerful typhoon approached, railway operators in the Tokyo metropolitan area suspended train services on Saturday morning, as had been announced in advance.

The number of railway services subject to the planned suspension was to be expanded, and almost all train services except for some subway lines were scheduled to stop on the same day.

East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) has said train services will likely resume shortly after noon on Sunday. However, it also said the suspension may continue for longer depending on damage.
