A 17-year-old boy was killed and four other teenagers wounded in one of two shootings Sunday night in north suburban Evanston.
Karl Dennison was among five teens shot around 7:15 p.m. near Green Bay Road and Asbury Street, according to Evanston police. Dennison, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two females and two males, all between the ages of 14 and 18 years old, were also wounded, police said. They were all residents of Evanston or Skokie.
A 14-year-old remained in critical condition on Monday, Sgt. Ken Carter said.
No one was in custody. Police said the shooting appeared to be a targeted attack. The motive was still under investigation.
In a news conference Monday afternoon, Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss said: “Today Evanston’s heart is broken.”
“Any act of violence that occurs here tears at the fabric of our community,” Biss said. “But the extraordinary youth of the victims of last night’s tragedy is tugging that the consciences of all of us today.”
There was a second shooting hours later near Chicago Avenue and Howard Street, police said. A 29-year-old man from Chicago was wounded around 11:15 p.m. and was expected to survive. The shootings were not believed to be connected.
Police refused to answer questions at a news conference Monday afternoon.
