1 killed, 2 wounded in shootings

Jan. 06--One man was killed and at least two others were wounded in separate shootings on the city's South and North sides Monday night.

Shortly before midnight, a 24-year-old man was killed in the Burnside neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

About 11:40 p.m., the man was sitting in a parked vehicle in the 9300 block of South Burnside Avenue when several people approached from a nearby alleyway and opened fire, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The 24-year-old, later identified as Larry Edwards of the 1300 block of West 109th Street according to the Cook County medical examiner's office, was shot in his side and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Gaines said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 12:49 a.m., officials said. A Monday autopsy report said he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

About 9:05 p.m., a man and a woman were shot in the Edgewater neighborhood on the North Side. The shooting happened in the 5900 block of North Kenmore Avenue, Gaines said.

A 29-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were standing on the block when they were shot in an apparent drive-by, Gaines said. The woman was shot in the leg and taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston where her condition stabilized. The man, 29, was shot in the abdomen and also taken to St. Francis in serious condition, Gaines said.

Further details surrounding the shooting were not immediately available.

Two women were also stabbed in separate attacks overnight, police said.

Most recently, a 26-year-old woman was stabbed in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

About 12:53 a.m., the woman was stabbed in the neck in the 4000 block of West Wilcox Street, Gaines said.

The woman, who was stabbed by someone she knew, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where her condition was stabilized, police said.

About 9:44 p.m. Monday, a 56-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in the Ashburn neighborhood. The woman was stabbed inside a home in the 3500 block of West 77th Place about 9:44 p.m., police said.

She was pronounced dead on the scene. Police said the stabbing was domestic-related.

As of early Tuesday, no one was in custody in connection with either stabbing, police said.
