CHICAGO _ A man was killed and two other people were wounded early Monday in a pedestrian tunnel that connects the Red and Blue line Jackson stops _ the third attack on a CTA train line in less than two weeks, according to Chicago police.
The shooting took place just after 2 a.m. in the 200 block of South Dearborn Street in the Loop, police said.
One man was shot in the abdomen and chest and pronounced at the scene, police said. Another man was shot in the head and arm, and he was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
A 19-year-old woman was shot in the lower back and was also taken to Northwestern, where she was in good condition. She was believed to be with the other victims but was not the target, police said.
The gunman ran from the scene and has not been arrested, police said. Investigators believe the gunmen knew the two men and was involved in a dispute before the shooting, police said.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that detectives "have good leads on a person of interest from the senseless murder" and added that "additional info will be available soon."
Police blocked off all entrances to the Jackson station. A woman walked up to the scene at State Street and Jackson Boulevard. She said she was coming home on the Blue Line after visiting a friend and typically gets off at the Jackson station.
The train slowed down when it approached the station and the woman, who declined to be named for safety concerns, could see at least 10 officers before the train kept traveling to the next stop, she said.
She moved to Chicago two months ago from France to study at Harold Washington College, she said. She was originally living on the South Side but just recently moved to the Loop because it was closer to school and because she thought it would be safer.
"It's kind of weird because I was supposed to get off here, so I could've been in the middle of it," she said.
Red Line trains continued to run and did not stop at the Jackson station, according to the CTA. They were rerouted to elevated lines between the Fullerton station and Cermak-Chinatown station. Blue Line trains also continued running but did not stop at Jackson, the CTA said. Check here for when the stations will reopen.
Earlier this month, a 26-year-old musician was stabbed on Feb. 4 at the Red Line Jackson station by a woman who said his guitar music was giving her a headache. A day later, a man was shot during a robbery on the Blue Line at the UIC-Halsted stop.
The last time a shooting took place on the Jackson stop tunnel was Dec. 6, 2018. A 27 year-old-man was shot in the left hip. Police said he likely knew the gunman and did not cooperate with investigators.
