1 killed, 2 slightly injured in avalanche in Japan's Northern Alps

MATSUMOTO, Nagano -- A man died in an avalanche that occurred at about 10 a.m. Sunday near Kuraigahara on Mt. Norikura in the Northern Japanese Alps in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. Four other men were also caught in the avalanche. People nearby tried to rescue them, but the victim, a self-employed 49-year-old of Yasu, Shiga Prefecture, died. Two other members who were with the man sustained light injuries. Two other climbers in a separate group were uninjured.

According to the Nagano Local Meteorological Office, there was heavy snowfall in the area on Friday and Saturday.

An avalanche advisory had been issued.
