1 killed, 1 wounded in domestic hostage situation in Chicago Lawn

March 12--A woman was critically wounded and a 26-year-old man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a nearly eight-hour barricade situation in the city's Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side, according to Chicago police.

Interim Chicago police Superintendent John Escalante said a child was also taken for observation after the multihour hostage situation ended shortly before 10 p.m.

Police were called to the 3000 block of West 60th Street t about 2:20 p.m. after a man with a gun had barricaded himself inside a home, police said. SWAT team members were called to the scene. According to Escalante, the situation was domestic-related.

The gunman shot himself in the head and died at the scene, police said. The man was identified as Darnell Williams of the 3000 block of West 60th Street, and he was pronounced dead at 9:58 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A young baby was held hostage and a woman suffered serious gunshot wounds, Escalante said.

Chicago Fire Department officials said the woman, who is in her 20s, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. The 1-year-old child was taken to Holy Cross Hospital for observation.

A man in his 20s was dead at the scene, according to fire officials.
