1 dead, 8 wounded in shootings in Chicago since Sunday

Aug. 10--A man was killed and at least eight other people were wounded in shootings in Chicago since Sunday evening, police said.

The fatal shooting occurred at 11:05 p.m. Sunday in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side. A 32-year-old man was in a parked car in the 1500 block of South Kildare Avenue when someone on a bicycle approached and tried to rob him, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man in the vehicle began driving south on Kildare, and the person on the bike began firing shots at the car. The man was hit on his left side and crashed the car through a fence in the 1800 block of South Kildare. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:26 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A family member at the scene identified him as Marquise Mitchell, and police said he was 32 years old. The medical examiner's office said he lived in the 2400 block of West Madison Street.

In the most recent nonfatal shooting, an 18-year-old man was shot in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

He was in the 6400 block of South King Drive at 4:15 a.m. Monday when he was shot in the hip and ankle, said Gaines, citing preliminary information. He was taken to Stroger Hospital. No further information was immediately available.

In other shootings:

--At about 2:15 a.m. Monday, a 25-year-old man was shot in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side, police said. He was walking in the 1100 block of North Kedvale Avenue when he heard shots and felt pain, said Gaines. He was shot in the leg and went to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

--A 17-year-old boy was shot in the hand in the South Chicago neighborhood early Monday, Gaines said. He told police was walking to the store about 2 a.m. in the 2800 block of East 80th Street when a dark vehicle pulled up, the driver got out of the car and fired shots at him. The boy was hit in the hand and took himself to South Shore Hospital in good condition, Gaines said.

--A 31-year-old man walked into Holy Cross Hospital early Monday and told police he had been shot in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, Gaines said. He was in the 1700 block of West 58th Street at about 12:30 a.m. when he heard gunfire and felt pain, Gaines said. He was shot in the arm and leg. His condition had stabilized.

--At 12:10 a.m. Monday, a man was shot in the West Town neighborhood on the Near West Side. The man, 36, was walking in the 2500 block of West Lake Street when someone came up and announced a robbery, Gaines said. He was shot in the buttocks while trying to get away. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

--A 26-year-old man was shot in the 800 block of North LaSalle Street in the Near North neighborhood at 11:43 p.m., Gaines said. He was sitting in a van when someone walked up and began shooting. He was hit in both feet and took himself to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

--A 35-year-old man was shot in the West Pullman neighborhood at 9:50 p.m. Sunday, said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago police spokeswoman. He was in the 600 block of West 127th Street when he was shot in the back, she said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, in Oak Lawn where his condition was stabilized. Police did not have more information about the circumstances of the shooting because the man was being uncooperative with police, Pacheco said.

--A 35-year-old man was shot in the Little Village neighborhood Sunday evening, police said. He was in the 2400 block of South Washtenaw Avenue at 8:30 p.m. when someone in a four-door vehicle shot him, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago police spokeswoman. The vehicle then fled westbound. The man was shot in the leg and told police he heard gunfire and felt pain. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
