1 dead, 6 hurt in city shootings

June 14--A man has been killed and at least six people have been injured in separate shootings across the city since Saturday evening, police said.

Around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, a man was shot to death and another man was wounded in a shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

A 40-year-old man and a 38-year-old man were standing on the corner of 44th and Honore streets when a red SUV and a light-colored sedan pulled up next to them and someone inside both cars fired gunshots, Estrada said, citing preliminary information.

The 40-year-old was struck in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as David Martinez Jr. of the 4500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The 38-year-old was hit in the neck and was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where his condition stabilized, Estrada said.

No one was in custody in connection with the shooting early Sunday morning.
