2 killed, 12 wounded in separate shootings across Chicago

April 02--Two people were killed, including a 16-year-old boy, and at least 12 others were injured in shootings across the city since Wednesday afternoon.

The 16-year-old was killed in the Marquette Park neighborhood. Someone shot him in the 3000 block of West 71st Street about 6:25 p.m., said Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago police spokeswoman. Witnesses reported seeing the boy run into a backyard on the block and collapse. Officers found the boy with a gunshot wound to his shoulder, police said.

The teen was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was later pronounced dead, Lemmon said. He was one of five people shot before sunrise Thursday morning, police said.

Early Thursday morning, a man was killed just outside his mother's West Englewood home, one of five people shot in the city's Englewood Police District over a 5 hour period between about 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. He was one of 3 people killed and 6 others wounded in the Englewood police district since Monday afternoon.

About 2:05 a.m. Thursday, the 36-year-old was standing outside in the 2100 block of West 72nd Place when he got into an argument with another man who then pulled out a gun and opened fire, police said. The man was shot repeatedly and died on the scene. The gunman fled in a white sedan, and as of early Thursday and no one was in custody in the shooting.

The first shooting Wednesday afternoon happened near Homan Avenue and Lexington Street about 1:40 p.m. Police said the 21-year-old man shot was dropped off in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the torso that he suffered near that intersection.

A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said a black Dodge Durango pulled alongside a gold minivan as the two vehicles were heading west on Lexington.

Someone in the Durango fired five shots at the minivan near Lexington and Homan, leaving shattered tinted glass in the street. Police laid a cone in the center of the glass and hung tape around the intersection.

Students in shorts and gray polo shirts walked home from school past the scene. A woman walked her three children past as the youngest child held an ice cream cone dripping vanilla ice cream on his hand and smeared across his face.

A single police SUV stood watch at the scene.

But the shooting left its mark on the neighborhood.

"Ain't even hot out yet," 27-year-old Charles Sanders mused to no one in particular as he crossed Homan. "It's just the beginning. Every time it gets hot though. It's a damn shame."

A student wearing a maroon shirt and carrying an oversize blue Nike backpack approached the crime scene and waved for an officer to see if he could walk through the scene to get home.

A police officer clenched his mouth into a half-frown before waving the boy through.

Later, students walked up to the crime scene and paused, unsure of whether they could duck under tape to get from Lexington to Homan.

They, too, were waved through by a detective, who chatted with them as they crossed.

"Most of the time, if you ask nicely, you'll get what you want," he told them.

An evidence technician took photos of the intersection and the broken glass and left after 10 minutes, allowing the officers to cut the tape and remove it.

In non-fatal shootings, a man was critically wounded about 6:20 a.m. in the South Shore neighborhood. Officers found a man who had been shot in the face in the 7100 block of South Cyril Court, police said. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Police could not immediately identify the man, so they could not provide his age. Other details surrounding the shooting were also not available.

Just before 4 a.m., two other men were shot in the 6600 block of South Union Avenue in Englewood. The men were driving in a vehicle on the block when someone inside a dark-colored SUV pulled alongside them and opened fire, police said. A 31-year-old man was shot in the lower back, and a 35-year-old man was shot in the chest. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital where conditions were stabilized, authorities said.

About 2:30 a.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the 4600 block of South Lake Park Avenue in the Kenwood neighborhood. The man was shot in the torso and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where his condition stabilized, police said. Further details were not immediately available.

Hours earlier, a 22-year-old man was shot in Brighton Park. The man was riding a motorcycle through an alleyway in the 4500 block of South Troy Street when he was shot in the leg, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center in good condition.

Minutes later, a 21-year-old man was wounded during a driveby shooting in Englewood. The man was in the 500 block of West 61st Street about 11:45 p.m. when someone inside a passing black SUV fired shots, hitting the man in the right side of his body, police said. The man ran to a nearby porch and collapsed. Police found the man on the porch and transported him to John H. Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized.

About 11:05 p.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in the 6500 block of South Laflin Street. The man was standing on the front porch of a home on the block when someone approached on foot and opened fire, hitting the man in his leg and arm, police said. The man was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital where his condition stabilized.

About 9:30 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was wounded in a driveby shooting in the Washington Heights neighborhood. The teen was standing on the sidewalk in the 9900 block of South Peoria Street when a gunman inside a light-colored vehicle fired shots. The teen was shot in his foot, and a friend drove him to Roseland Hospital where his condition stabilized, police said.

A 29-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his leg, arm and buttocks about 5:40 p.m. in the 300 block of West 95th Street in the Princeton Park neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said. He was taken to an area hospital in serious condition, according to police.

About 5:10 p.m., a 21-year-old man was shot in the 3800 block of West Roosevelt Road, police said. He was shot in the lip and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.

Ten minutes earlier, a 23-year-old man was shot in the 5900 block of North Sheridan Road in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood. He was hit in the left arm and left thigh and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition, police said.
