1 dead, 4 injured after SUV runs through group outside soccer game in Illinois

GURNEE, Ill. _ One man was killed and four people were injured late Friday when a fight outside the Lake County Sports Complex in Waukegan ended with an SUV driving through a group of people and fleeing the scene, according to Waukegan police.

In a statement released Saturday, police report a suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident and charged with first-degree murder after a patrol officer executed a traffic stop on a damaged SUV fitting a description provided by witnesses.

Priscilian Carranza, 22, of Waukegan appeared in bond court Saturday and was held in Lake County jail on $5 million bond on the murder charge, according to police. He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 29.

According to the statement, patrol officers responded around 11:40 p.m. to a report of a fight at the Lake County Sports Center parking lot, located on the west side of Waukegan, about 21 miles north of Chicago.

"It was also reported that someone was struck by a vehicle," the statement added. "While en route officers were updated that the suspect vehicle had fled the scene. The suspect vehicle was described as a black SUV. Upon arrival, officers located multiple victims that had been struck by the suspect vehicle."

One victim, described by police as a man in his 40s, was transported to an area hospital, where he later died. The man's identity was being withheld by authorities on Saturday pending an autopsy scheduled for Monday.

Three other victims _ described by police as two men in their late teens and a 10-year-old girl _ are related to the man who was killed, according to the statement. A fifth victim was described as a man in his 20s.

The two teens and the man in his 20s were all transported to area hospitals for treatment of what police reported as moderate injuries from which they are expected to recover. Police report the girl was not transported for treatment.

According to the statement, investigators believe "that an altercation occurred in the parking lot of the sports center as a soccer match was ending," and the confrontation ended with a 2010 GMC driving into the victims.

The statement added that "as the investigation was beginning, a patrol officer spotted a black SUV with front-end damage and conducted a traffic stop. The black SUV was occupied with three people. Those three people were brought to the Waukegan Police Department."

The SUV was identified as the suspect vehicle, and one of the occupants was identified as having been the driver at the time of the incident, according to the statement.
