1 dead, at least 17 hurt in separate shootings

March 27--One man is dead and at least 17 others have been wounded in shootings in Chicago since Saturday afternoon, police said.

Two people were shot at 2:10 p.m., one fatally, on the 7000 block of South Paulina Street in the West Englewood neighborhood, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a police spokesman.

In that incident, a 27-year-old man was shot three times in the right shoulder, one time in the left shoulder, one time in the back and once in each leg, Quaid said.

The man, identified as Cordero Mosley of the 6700 block of South Wood Street, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:28 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office and police.

A 28-year-old man who was with him suffered a graze wound to his head and refused treatment, according to Quaid and fire officials.

The older man is a known gang member and convicted felon, police said. The two men were walking when two people approached them, fired and ran away, police said.

At least 16 were wounded in other shootings. Seven people were hurt in three shootings in the Humboldt Park neighborhood from 9:25 p.m. to 12:10 a.m., police said.

Most recently, a 30-year-old man was seriously hurt in a drive-by shooting about 2:50 a.m. Sunday in the Little Village neighborhood on the West Side, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man was walking on the street in the 2900 block of West 25th Street when someone in a white vehicle fired shots, striking him in the left shoulder. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was in serious condition, Zala said.

About 2 a.m., a 31-year-old man critically wounded in a shooting in front of the Express Grill at 1260 S. Union Ave. in the University Village neighborhood, police said.

The man was involved in an argument with a male attacker who went to his vehicle, pulled out a gun and fired shots, Zala said.

The man was struck in the stomach, chest and left leg. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was in critical condition, Zala said.

Early Sunday morning, police officers blocked off four shell casings that lay on Union Avenue in front of the Express Grill with yellow crime tape.

Dozens of people stood in lines at the 24-hour joint as well as at the nearby Jim's Original hot dog stand while officers investigated the shooting.

A handful of people walking by briefly glanced at the police and the crime tape, shaking their heads. But most people had their heads turned away from the scene of the shooting as they ate or ordered their food.

About 1 a.m., a 25-year-old man was wounded in a drive-by shooting in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, police said.

The man was walking on the sidewalk in the 5100 block of West Washington Boulevard when someone in a vehicle fired shots at him, Zala said.

He was struck in the right arm and left leg and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, Zala said.

About 12:10 a.m., three men were wounded in a shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, Zala said.

The three men, ages 24, 21 and 19, were walking on the sidewalk in the 3900 block of West Thomas Street when they heard gunshots and realized they were struck, Zala said.

The 24-year-old was shot in the right leg. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, Zala said.

The 21-year-old was hit in the abdomen and buttocks, and the 19-year-old was struck in the right leg. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital.

The conditions of all three men stabilized, Zala said.

At the scene of the shooting, police officers found about nine shell casings on the southwestern corner of Harding Avenue and Thomas Street.

Bullets shattered two windows in a two-story residential building on the northwestern corner of Harding and Thomas, police said.

Police officers blocked off the shell casings with red crime tape. They also cordoned off a small section of sidewalk and road in front of an entrance door to the two-story building.

About 11:20 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in the West Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man was walking on the sidewalk in the 6500 block of South Vernon Avenue when a male attacker approached him and fired shots. He was hit in the right side of his chest, and he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

About 10:55 p.m., a 19-year-old and a 27-year-old man were wounded in a shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, Zala said.

The two men were standing on a sidewalk in the 800 block of North Sacramento Avenue when they heard gunshots and realized they were shot. The 19-year-old was shot in the right shoulder, and the 27-year-old was hit in the right buttock, Zala said.

Both managed to get to Presence Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, but the 19-year-old was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, Zala said. The conditions of both stabilized.

Police officers cordoned off the scene of the shooting with yellow and red crime tape. At least 11 shell casings lay scattered across Sacramento Avenue.

While a pair of officers waited in their squad car, which illuminated the crime scene with its blinking blue lights, a red Chevrolet traveling north on Sacramento drove through the crime scene, ripping red crime tape. The car stopped in the middle of the road where the cluster of casings lay, several feet south of the squad car.

An officer walked out of the squad car in haste.

"You idiot, what are you doing," the officer yelled at the driver of the car. "You wanna step out?"

A young man wearing a dark blue hoodie and light pants stepped out of the driver's side of the car.

"I swear to God I didn't see," he told the officer.

The officer handcuffed the man and led him to the back of the car, where the two talked.

A few moments later, another police squad car pulled up to the crime scene. Officers eventually led the driver of the car into that squad car, where he sat in the back seat.

Two more people were shot about 9:25 p.m. in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said.

A 40-year-old man and a 25-year-old man were standing on the front porch of a home in the 900 block of North Karlov Avenue when they heard shots and realized they were struck, police said.

The 40-year-old was struck in the back of the head, and he was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

The younger man was hit in the lower left leg. He was not cooperating with police officers, and he refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

Police officers found over 12 shell casings at the scene of the shooting.

The man was inside a vehicle that was traveling east on the 300 block of East 47th Street when someone in an unknown vehicle fired shots, Alfaro said.

The man suffered graze wounds to his arm and back. He managed to get to Stroger Hospital, where he was in good condition, Alfaro said.

At 5:38 p.m., a 19-year-old man was shot on the 6700 block of South Wolcott Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, Quaid said.
