April 30--One person was killed and two others were injured when an SUV speeding down the middle lane of the Stevenson Expressway collided with a truck as the SUV tried to exit onto Interstate 94 early Wednesday, according to state police.
Both the SUV and the truck slammed into a concrete wall, and the truck then struck a Honda Civic around 5:45 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-55 near Throop Street, state police said.
The SUV, a Ford Expedition, was traveling north on I-55 near Throop Street at "a high rate of speed" when the driver decided to change lanes and take the exit for northbound Interstate 94, according to the state police, citing preliminary findings.
The Ford did not slow down or brake and rear-ended a red Dodge Ram, state police said. Both vehicles smashed into a concrete wall on the right side of the highway, sending the Dodge crashing into a Honda, according to the statement from state police.
A 28-year-old man who was a passenger in the Ford was killed, state police said, adding that he was not wearing a seat belt. He was later identified as Enrique Moreno, of the 4500 block of South Troy Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
A 25-year-old man who was driving the Ford was taken in critical-to-serious condition to Stroger Hospital, according to Chicago Fire Chief Joseph Roccosalva and the state police. Police said he also was not wearing a seat belt.
A third person, a passenger in the Dodge Ram, was taken in fair condition to Mercy Hospital, according to state police and Roccosalva.
Traffic was reduced to one lane as police investigated the accident.
