1 dead, 12 wounded by gunfire in Chicago

May 26--One man died and at least 12 people were wounded in shootings from mid-morning Wednesday through early Thursday, according to Chicago police.

Police said they were conducting a death investigation after finding a 26-year-old man dead in West Englewood early Thursday morning.

At about 12:35 a.m., officers responding to a domestic dispute at a home in the 5600 block of South Wolcott Avenue found him inside with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Other shootings:

--On the Far South Side, two people, 20 and 25, were shot in the Fernwood neighborhood at about 2:50 a.m. Thursday, according to preliminary information from police. They were in the 10200 block of South State Street when they were both shot in the leg. They went to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in fair condition.

--On the South Side about the same time, a 25-year-old man walked into Advocate Trinity Hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He told police he had been shot during a party in the 4400 block of South Shields Avenue in the Fuller Park neighborhood. He was listed in good condition.

--At 12:40 a.m., a 35-year-old man was shot in South Shore. He was sitting in a parked car in the 7100 block of South Clyde Avenue when he heard gunshots and felt pain. He went to Jackson Park Hospital with gunshot wounds to the thigh and shoulder.

--About 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, a 41-year-old man was shot in Canaryville, police said. He was in the 700 block of West 48th Street when he was hit in the abdomen. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

--At 6:35 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in Englewood. He was sitting outside a residence in the 7600 block of South Sangamon Street when someone walked up, fired and fled. He was hit in the abdomen and groin and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. His condition was stabilized.

--At 4:45 p.m., a 21-year-old man was shot and critically wounded in East Garfield Park, police said. He was in the 200 block of South Pulaski Road when someone shot him, though police aren't sure how it happened and haven't encountered any witnesses. No one is in custody, and the wounded man is in critical condition at Stroger Hospital.

--At 4:20 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot at Jackie Robinson Park in the 10500 block of South Morgan Avenue in the Washington Heights neighborhood, police said. He was walking in the park when he was shot in the right leg, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

--At 1:25 p.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in Englewood. He walked into Holy Cross Hospital after someone shot him in the shoulder as he drove in the 1500 block of West 59th Street. He was listed in good condition.

--About 1:10 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in Woodlawn. He was outside in the 600 block of East Marquette Road when someone emerged from an alley and fired at him. He went to Stroger Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the thigh.

--At 11:20 a.m., an 18-year-old man was shot in the Fernwood neighborhood on the Far South Side. He was on the sidewalk in the 10100 block of South Wentworth Avenue when someone got out of a nearby gold sedan and fired shots. The man was hit in the right ankle and taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center, police said.

--A 26-year-old man was shot about 10:20 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Lockwood Avenue in the Austin neighborhood, police said. The man was hit in the leg and buttocks and was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park in an unknown condition, police said.
